Putin, though he used to be powerful, is now just another figurehead. His people are waiting for an opportunity to retire him. He really doesn't command much authority anymore due to several and repeated fuckups.

The effect of nukes on the environment is vastly overthought. Most destruction and loss of life is from the initial blast and most of the deadly fallout dissipates in around 48 hours, with nearly all fallout being at non-harmful levels in around two weeks.

There are a lot of ways we might destroy the world or make it uninhabitable, but nuclear bombs arent the way well end up doing it.

Putin still misses the days of the USSR as a superpower and Russia's GDP is less than Germany, France, Italy, and Canada, so he needs to do something to try and get people to take the country as a serious power again.

And just like last time, if he bothers to build more than a handful of these, he's going to run into an economic reckoning that won't end well for him.

The US's missile defence system can't handle Russia's *current* arsenal - it could maybe down a couple of missiles, but if Russia ever unloaded its entire arsenal at the US or any of her allies, it is literally impossible for the US's current defences to stop all or even most of the missiles. Hell, the entire point of MAD centres on the fact that *no one* can effectively defend against a nuclear assault, which is supposed to serve as a deterrent on anyone ever using them.

This is completely irrelevant. We do not live in a world where people will actively declare nuclear war on each other. Russia has nothing to gain from attacking the US or any other country for that matter.

If full scale war happened outside of the middle east or Africa (the only places were war is allowed), citizens would riot, especially the younger generation which more and more are detached from Nationalism due to globalization..
