Honestly? Yes. This contest overall proved that it's worth it to have these things more than once every 3-5 years. Maybe every 2-3. But only of Link is gone. The Cloud/Mario/Samus/Zelda/Snake group is close enough that any of them should be able to win on any given day. There is no clear #2. Same goes with the Pikachu/Crono/Mega Man group beneath them. But those final rounds are only that interesting if Link is out. There is not one character left that can reliably break 40% on him. With him gone we have five potential champs, and that's pre-rally. And no, I dont think a rally will ever beat him again. It took two of the most insane rallies ever, one with extremely suspicious circumstances, to take him down.

Why would you remove the strongest character from the bracket? Especially when he's already been relegated to side-contests like the legends bracket? This is a truly 'millenial' line of thinking. "Every character deserves to win". Fuck that noise, let me see Link 60-40 the next strongest character

To increase hype for the contest portion of the event. Everyone who has any idea about making brackets in these things will always pick Link to win it all because its a certainty bar rallies. This means the finals are basically worthless and the contest is decided before the finals.

If Link were removed this year for example there would be a reasonable split among Cloud, Mario, Snake, or Samus to win the title and hence there would be way more on the line in a final between 2 of them (plus a surprise run by someone like Zelda actually means something because she has a shot at unseating that group but even her miracle run still couldn't even get 40 on Link let alone beat him).

It has nothing to do with deserving, it's what makes the endgame more interesting.

With Link gone there are currently 5 potential champs sans rallies. That's great for our entertainment and can really make or break a bracket at the end, which is interesting.

You can have a bracket where Link doesn't face title contenders until near the end. We actually got this in 2002, by accident, where Link didn't face above midcarder strength until the semifinals. For anyone who isn't a title contender, facing Link is an honor, privilege, and joy.

I'm actually coming around to the notion that he should, NOT to give a chance for a different character to win, but to avoid feeding characters to Link who have no chance to even make things interesting

Link tried his hardest to let Cloud get a good score in the final, and he succeeded in staying under 60%. Guess that wasn't enough to fend off the calls for him to be removed.
