Still one of the best games ever released. Stands up very well, I think. The only real bad thing is the sloppy controls. Loose, a bit unresponsive, and Mario slides a bit too much, perhaps.

Only 3D platformer that ever beat it was B-K. Took the basic formula, and made it even greater.

what you have to remember about mario 64 is that there was basically no precedent for anything that it did.

instead of just directly translating a 2d platformer to a 3d space (like crash bandicoot), nintendo completely reinvented the wheel with mario 64. when you look at it conceptually, side-by-side with something like super mario world, the way you play those two games is almost completely different.

everything about mario 64 is inventive & groundbreaking, and besides Zelda on the NES, i honestly cant think of another game that had the level of impact mario 64 had.

I loved it as a kid, but I don't really think I could go back to it for more than an hour of nostalgia. On the other hand, I'd kill to have a port or Eshop version of Sunshine.

Speaking of super Mario 64 and ff7, there was a hilarious gimmick poster years ago named Legendary Kapik who wrote a joke review (still was posted to the site and was up for years) for a game he called "super donkey Mario 84" that was mostly actually about ff7. He called chocobos chickens and rambled nonsensically. It was a fun read

Man I actually say this.

Used to be Half-Life 2 honestly, but that seems to have cooled down.

Mario 64 is GREAT and super important to game history, but it is not better than a fuck ton of 3D platformers people put it over. They let the historical significance get in their way of the actual quality of the game. There are a lot of shitty levels in 64 and the controls are not very good. Not even compared to modern stuff, but to stuff from that generation.

What levels are bad?

Hazy Maze Cave
Wet-Dry World
Tiny-Huge Island (feel like people will defend this one)
And worst of all, Tick Tock Clock

On top of that there are levels that I wouldn't call flat out bad, but ones that I didn't enjoy or had a lot of problems like Shifting Sand Land, Rainbow Ride, Snowman's Land or any underwater level. Big Boo's Haunt has some crappy parts to it, but honestly the good stuff in that level is so good that it more than makes up for it and it's one of my favorites.

The stages I really enjoyed are Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Lethal Lava Land and the castle hub world in general.

huge fat disagree

SM64 nailed 3D platforming controls on the first try. Absolutely nailed it.
(except for the camera, which wasn't perfect but still far beyond every other 3D game for 2 generations)

I'd argue Hazy Maze Cave and Tick Tock Clock are objectively bad though. Wet-Dry World I really didn't like, but my memory's kinda fuzzy on a few things there.

I should really replay that game sometime to see if my opinions change one way or another.

the levels I'd say are bad are the water levels since movement in this game is really expressive except while you're swimming

I mean Hazy Maze Cave is actually a pretty bad level. The 100 coins star is one of the most tedious missions in any Mario game.

Nah. Mario 64 did things that no other games, even 3D platformers, were doing at the time. It set the standard for open-ended collecting that games like Bamjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Jak and Daxter and others would follow and eventually expand on.

Even newer games are rooted in the standard set by Mario 64. A Hat in Time is basically an homage to that game and others that followed in its footsteps.

None of this is to mention that Mario is more versatile in his movement in 64 than any other game, which introduces a lot of possible and sometimes unintended ways to maneuver through levels.

This is some good stuff that I agree with.
