This topic was much funnier when I misread pennies as penises. I really need more sleep.

They have less value than cost to manufacture for sure.

I've saved up my pennies a couple times and it's always been pointless. They really don't add up to shit, especially when you consider the space they take up in a change jar. They take up over 10x the space of a dime to equal the same value and about 4.5x as much space as a nickel for the same value.

Not having to deal with pennies would be worth losing a few cents (a fraction of a percentage) per transaction.

I would ask for the 3 pennies they owe me. Like I said in my first post, they add up.

No, they really don't. The handful of pennies you get as change every week at the grocery store will never make a noticeable difference in your life.

When I was in kindergarten, we collected pennies and exchanged them for a reward every time we got to 100. That is the only time pennies have ever really mattered in my life.

You say that now but that pack of gum you gave to a homeless guy using the $1 that you got in change because you used your pennies wisely and ended up with that $1 went on to turn his life around and track you down once he made it and donate you $1mil while going on to cure the common cold, but okay throw away your pennies.

Then either the person or the place giving change are losing money. It'd be better to just give pennies back.

Really?

Would you feel short changed if you spent $49.87 on something with a $50 bill and you received 10 cents change?

Even though all non cash transactions are calculated to the cent

You guys realize this already happens right? For instance:

I go to the gas station and buy an Arizona Tea. The total is $1.03. But when I buy two of them, the total is $2.07. Any guesses as to why that is?

Because the actual total of one tea ISN'T exactly $1.03. It is actually somewhere between $1.0325 and $1.0349. So you see, prices are already rounded up. You just don't know this because you didnt grow up in a world where "half pennies" were a thing, which they used to be until we discontinued them. And btw, when the half penny was discontinued, it had much more buying power than the current penny does now (it was worth about what a dime is worth now)

https://gizmodo.com/the-u-s-killed-the-half-penny-when-it-was-worth-what-a-1639266183

It is high fucking time we discontinue pennies and just round up to the nearest $0.05 for cash transactions and call it a day. Sometimes you'll lose a couple of cents, sometimes you'll win a couple of cents. It's not that big of a deal. Or hell just go ahead and do it for noncash transactions too for uniformity

A penny has basically no value.
Pennies can add up.

Also there has to be something to represent the lowest amount of currency (being $0.01for USD) otherwise what would you do if someone spent $9.53 and paid with $10.00?

If they got rid of pennies, prices would just adjust accordingly.

Also, whole cents arent the lowest denomination in America. Pay close attention to the price next time you go to a gas station >_>

Nonsense. Pay attention to your receipt. The extra 9 jusr says you pay 9c more for every ten gallons.

That is how fractions work yes <_<

But this is different from what you said. You're not going to get charged 2.159 if you buy exactly one gallon of gas.

... yes you are. That is exactly how it works. The $2.159 rounds up to $2.16 because there are no smaller demoninations, or down to $2.15 here in Canada when using cash.

I have a gas receipt in front of me. 35.945L x $1.099/L = $39.50355. Rounds down to $39.50. If I could magically pump exactly 1L I would be charged $1.10.

It seems you're not understanding fractions or rounding at all, or just trolling.

I pretty much never tell people to 'keep the change' but there was this one time I bought something and the change was literally 1 cent. So I said to keep the change in a sort of 'eh don't bother pulling it out the store can keep it' since I didn't want a damn penny. The cashier said 'thank you' and right then it hit me like a cement plant at how bad that felt.

Felt like I called the employee a peasant and to be burdened with a damn penny as well.

It's like the time someone asked if I minded if they sat next to me on the bus and I said 'yes' as in they can sit there only to get a glare and leave.

Gotta love that feel.

Guh I do this all the time.

"Would you mind ____?"
"Sure."
"...?"
"I mean... wait, hang on..."

When I remember, I answer any request with "I can do that" just to sidestep the issue entirely.
