So, are you advocating for a longer work week, or a shorter one?

I've been trying to argue for a 6-month 4 12s and 6 month 4 8s at my job. Heck, Id be ecstatic for 4 10s. That's basically 50 extra vacation days.

I've been more and more curious about Germany's way of doing things. 35 hour weeks, 24 paid days off averaged or something like that. Also saw where some employees won a legal battle to only work 28 hours a week for 2 years.

I'd probably go stir crazy if I worked that little though.

The $15,000 I went home with after a 3 week run made it worth it though. Oil/wind jobs + driving escorts in between contracts is what allowed me to travel as much and for as long as I did. If I worked a regular job I wouldn't have been able to come to Asia 3 times in 3 years (2 months - 8 months - 6 months).

That's how it was for me working in the oil/gas field and I didn't mind it at all. Being on the road there was no reason to not work as much as possible and coming home with a fat paycheck plus three/four weeks to do whatever I wanted was great.

It's true, anyone arguing in favor of the current 40 hour work week is just plain wrong, and you poor saps putting in 70+ hours just aren't getting to live life. Life is meant to be enjoyed, not spent at work. Work to live not live to work.

Yes somewhere there is a NEET smiling at how right they are, but take away the pathetic life of a NEET for a minute and you will see they are not altogether wrong in their analysis of the pitfalls of the 40 hour work week, which isn't even 40 hours when factoring in traffic and limits you place on your home life to insure you can go back out to work the next morning.

It's only designed to be 40 hours a week to trick people into spending all their leisure time on entertainment. The idea being back in the day, why make fancy cars for everyone if no one has time to use them.

Then of course, technology was supposed to make work more efficient yet we are still stuck in the mode of "logged hours".

It should be quality of work, not quantity.

One other big problem is when you work so much you get diminishing returns in terms of output.

How many people can say the spent a year and a half backpacking around a continent? Working 70+ hour weeks made that possible for me. Working those kind of hours made it possible for me to enjoy life more.

I wouldn't be interested in doing it anymore now that I have a child and I have a decent paying job where I work 40 hours/week (well, I teach about 15 hours, the rest is just sitting in the office playing on my phone). However, if I was still single and without a family I would definitely go back to working the 70+ hour weeks just so I could do even more travelling. Work 70-80 hours/week for 4 months so I can have 8 months off to travel and do whatever the hell I pleased is worth it no matter what way you look at it.

Thats a fair trade off.

But the point is most people don't make that trade off. They keep logging long hours and live to work and nothing but that.

I actually cashed my vacation time in.

Rather than taking time off with nowhere to go I opted to cash out my 80hrs.

I got a 120 hour check in a weeks time.

They literally gave me three pay stubs that weekend.

The extra 80hrs on my 40 didn't count as OT pay but it was still was a attractive payday.

Taxed me to hell but my account went up like $1,400 in a week.

That math only works if you aren't considering sleep.

An adult is recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep.

So ~56 hours of that 168 is dedicated is sleep.

40/112 is more like a 1/3. Actual is ~36%.

Eh. You're only awake for so long, and work is an exhausting thing for a lot of people. Hell, most people hate their jobs. Doing that for almost 40 years just so you can retire on little to nothing and not enjoy life is dehumanizing. We should strive to improve the quality of our lives, and more time to do what we actually want is the best place to start. People saying "oh well I work 12345 hours a day and I'm fine!" are missing the point and don't have any empathy.

This is also another factor. A lot of people come home from work and collapse from exhaustion. They essentially use home as a place to recover before they have to go back to work rather than using home as a place to live. Hence TV gets so much time because you are so damn tired.

And yes doing that for 40 years would kill anyone's soul.

For like 3 months a year I work 50-70hrs a week. I honestly enjoy the challenge and I know that it's going to end. The rest of the year I work 25-35hrs a week. It's a nice ebb and flow.
