I have had a theory with Sonic

Mania definitely did boost Tails and Knuckles since that game put them in the limelight again. Sonic got a deboost from Forces (which he is still a focus of which Tails and Knuckles are not) and generally being at the forefront of all the problems (see: most things aside Mania, and the Sonic Boom cartoon which almost nobody on this site watched) people have had with the series since 2013. The meme is never that Tails or Knuckles were never good. It's always Sonic.

This idea (side characters still doing well because they aren't the frontrunner, main characters get all the backlash) has been brought up for other characters and it's about as convenient of an explanation as I can think of it.

I'm having a hard time thinking that Sonic deboosted from Forces. If Sonic dropped every time he had a bad game (and he's had a ton of trash worse than Forces), he'd long be fodder already.

In the first match, Pikachu got 50.57% in the first match from registered users, but this decreased to 50.25% in the rematch. For anonymous users, it's a different story completely due to the rally in the first match which favored Pikachu. Anonymous users supported Mega Man with only 50.71% in the first match, but this went up to 52.28% in the rematch. It's believed the first rallies started shortly after 9:00 AM (first for Mega Man, and then Pikachu later on). Based on the 9:00 AM results in the first match, Mega Man currently had 51.92% with registered users, which isn't too far off from what Mega Man got in the rematch with the anonymous users.

Crono largely did similar with both registered and anonymous users. In the first match, Crono got 54.28% with registered users, and this only decreased to 54.06% in the rematch. For anonymous users, it was nearly identical - 55.94% in the first match, 55.96% in the rematch.

These results suggest that we're not really seeing SmartVoterFAQs (a term Ngamer invented) in action here. The only reason Mega Man pulled off the runback is because the Pikachu rally never showed up a second time. Pikachu also lost a little bit of support from registered users, but I think that's because we got some extra voters who might have missed the first match as it was on the first day after returning from the Thanksgiving break.
