If I'm looking objectively obviously it's not THAT bad, but personally and compared to what I've played to any lengthy degree...struggling to think of a worse game from the last decade for me.

I mean, it's the Bokurano anime situation, right? Not actually that terrible, but to me personally it's literally offensively bad.

The closest I would say for me personally is like, any David Cage game but I wouldn't actually give them a 2 or a 3 because they are delivering on a technical level and there are hints of things in them. Like anything that is delivering the experience it set out to give, regardless if you personally take offense to that experience or not, I would not give something as low as a 2 or 3. Yes, even with the way XV released it did still deliver the main experience it set out to do so for me it can't have a 2 or a 3.

I made a write-up about it after I finished if you're curious about my detailed thoughts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vGe-IDm6zQ-E4to4BBSFAa5ZiZkXK1jwVTSscPeGaIA/edit?usp=sharing

With regard to the rating thing: my ratings are based on personal feelings, not the objective quality of work. If something is a complete failure in all respects I generally won't hate it. It has to show signs of potential and draw me in if it wants me to truly despise it. A completely broken game can't do that. I might play it for a few minutes and then just stop because it's unplayable and forget it existed. Being a Final Fantasy game sets my expectations much higher to start with, and there were some appealing things about the concept of FFXV. I just didn't like any of what it did with them.

You David Cage thoughts are a bit confusing too. Like, if you hate the story, does it really matter how competent the rest of the game is? His games are pretty much 100% story.

David Cge games are also around that range because the technical prowess actually brings the game down, delivering the absolute garbage characters and story with higher fidelity.

Except for Connor, he's cool.

So I finished my "rewatch" of Kara no Kyoukai last night. Rewatch being in quotes because I had already seen movies 1-6 several years prior and was rewatching those, but last night was the first time I'd seen movie 7 since my friend and I never got around to movie 7 on my first watchthrough.

Overall movie 7 was pretty great, but I do have somewhat mixed feelings. On the one hand, movie 7 has the best individual scenes in the series by a country mile, which for the most part is enough to carry the movie. Shiki and Kokutou talking on the phone from each other's houses, Shiki's reaction to Kokutou's supposed death, and all the Kokutou/Shiki scenes at the very end were all outstanding. On the other hand, overall I am have some issues, mostly to do with the movie's philosophy on murder. First, it's kind of underwhelming how they make a big deal out of how Shiki shouldn't kill someone for the first time, but the reality is that she already kill Araya in movie 5. The movie even acknowledges this but then is like "well mages don't count because ???", which is kind of dumb. On a more substantive note, Kokutou takes this absolute stance against killing, which is fine in principle. For a while I can agree with this when Shiki is hunting the killer for mostly personal reasons, but then the movie decides to take it to this weird logical extreme in which Shiki won't even defend herself while a deranged psychopath walks up to her and tries to kill her, all because Kokutou said so. At that point I just don't see eye-to-eye with the movie anymore, which kills a lot of the impact the finale otherwise could have had.

I don't think I have anything to say on the series as a whole really, other than that it is good and that Yuki Kajiura is the GOAT.

Final movie ranking: 5 > 7 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 6

I will likely watch the epilogue and the extra OVA/movie/whatever at some point, but I wouldn't say I'm in a rush to do so.

I hated KnK 7 so much.

Speaking of it being super dumb regarding murder, don't forget how when Shiki finally does kill the deranged psychopath, the glasses dude's reaction is basically 'lol that's fine' even though he spent the whole movie being adamantly against it. Ugh, it couldn't even be consistent.

This specific aspect didn't bother me actually.

There's a few ways to frame this I think, but my understanding/interpretation is that Kokutou cares more about Shiki than he does about morals. In other words I think his primary objection is not "You shouldn't kill people because killing is bad", but instead "You shouldn't kill people because the process of becoming a murderer will be painful for you, since you recognize that killing is bad." This isn't an after-the-fact rationalization either because I distinctly remember internally calling out Kokutou's declaration of "I'll never forgive you if you kill him" as a bluff when they were having the phone conversation before anything in the finale had occurred.

Good shit, I already had my coworker's DVDs of all of the show and movies (crazy I know right) to watch them earlier last year for the first time but glad it's getting a way people don't have to fuckin sell their kidneys and sacrifice a blood relative just to have access to it.

I'd say it's definitely worth watching, one of the most influential and original anime series I've ever seen. It does some crazy shit. But fuck Shinji.

Yeah, for KnK7 it was more about killing being bad because it hurts a person to kill someone rather than because it's immoral. I mean, we see this in real life too, where soldiers or cops or regular people killing to defend themselves or others will still be severely traumatized by the act. I liked the movie a lot just because it succeeded in being very emotional. And I love the ending song. For a while it made me cry every time I listened to it.

It's not mecha in the same way Madoka isn't a magical girl show.

At the time of release it made a lot more sense to say they were defying the genre, but so many copycats came afterwards that the genre just shifted to absorb them. In both cases you have to remember that these were game changing shows, though.

My exciting quest to slowly catch back up on airing stuff continues!

Slime is still solid. I like all the powers that little slime has, and the fun interactions with the various characters. My only real issue is that the setting doesn't feel like it has anything going for it, it's just a generic fantasy land for the most part. There are elements that could come together into something unique, though, so I guess I'll see where it goes. I hope control of the forest becomes a bigger thing with different sides and tactics and he doesn't just go off on a generic adventure or something.

Zombieland Saga is still a lot of fun. I feel like they've toned down on the craziness since when I stopped. The bit with the lightning strike was awesome though. But they also expanded on the characters so it was a decent trade-off. I like them all and I'm excited to continue watching.

Ranking of stuff I'm caught up on:

Bunny Girl
Anima Yell
Zombie Land
Uzamaid
Ms. vampire
Goblin Slayer
Slime

Those are all good shows though. I should probably catch up on one of the shitty ones next. I wonder if Conception ever managed to rise above being completely terrible.

It may be eight weeks late, but I finally focused enough to finish the last few episodes of two shows from last season.

Planet With was pretty great! My favorite thing about this anime has to be the pacing, it was always impressive just how much action and character/plot development it managed to fit into each episode. I also want to mention how nicely it blended humor and seriousness. This is an anime where a weird cat mascot thing can be goofy trying to look at a figurine's panties and then a few minutes later I'm 100% invested in some deep plot moment. I also really liked the characters, especially Soya and Nozomi. Overall, I really liked it.

Hanebado, meanwhile, was a piece of shit from start to finish. I don't think I've ever seen something with such muddled and (quite frankly) offensive themes as this story. It made en effort to drain the fun out of literally every scene, always playing people to their most despicable while keeping the plot consistently grim. Things that should have been foreshadowed appeared out of nowhere. Things that should have led to something later were forgotten or fell flat. To put it simply, the writing was atrocious in every aspect. I hated every single character and everything that happened in this anime. It looked kind of nice at times, I guess, but that simply wasn't enough to salvage this from being a dumpster fire. Anyone who feels like watching this, just watch Scorching Ping Pong Girls instead. It's better.
