Well I did do pretty well at Arena back when I played but yeah I won't deny deck construction is skill based (unless of course you're just sheeping someone else's deck-- but you can't do that in Arena exactly) so Arena will have a higher skill element in general because it's highly deck construction based

Granted there's still a bit more luck than there should be even in Arena due to RNG in who/what you face and of course the actual mechanics of the game itself which are saturated with it. But yeah should be no surprise that I basically only played Arena when I actually played the game.

No you can definitely succeed at Hearthstone if you know how to play. At medium ish levels you can climb the ladder in any CCG really really quickly since everyone netdecks there, so you just need to play around the same few things, and those players will often just kind of tunnel vision and lose.

Once you get higher up people know what they're doing and will actually think about these things so the game becomes a lot more random, but I'm a lot more ok with those losses since they were against legit players. Maybe that's why the randomness on the ladder doesn't really bother me that much? It's definitely not 100% luck though, that post was extremely hyperbolic.

Hearthstone is all about who has the better deck and who is using the flavor of the month strat until you get cards to be on par.

Oh yeah for sure. Arena deck construction isn't 100% skill based because of course you can get screwed by just a bunch of garbage, even ignoring the in game RNG and matchup RNG.

But certain garbage clicks together with other garbage a lot better and having an intuition in your picks to make it click together in the most optimal way is definitely a skill and makes Arena by far the most skill based mode of the game.

From what I understand the mobile game is just a reskin of Crusaders of Light (another mobile game I know nothing about), which is pretty insulting if true.

made by the same developers to boot. NetEase is a chinese company that dishes out mobile crap and they've been working with Blizzard for releases. now they're actually doing a game too, using the same UI from one of their own games.

reskin or not is unknown but i don't think much more needs to be said beyond "chinese mobile game company."

I'm trying to figure out why you'd follow up one sentence with the other, then. WoW isn't "programmed" to be addictive. It's a MMORPG, and it's programmed the same as every other game in that genre, just better obviously. The nature of the "never ending" game isn't a bad one if that's the intended design; it's like getting angry at a fighting game for never ending. It's not supposed to.

MMORPG is an addictive genre by design.

I'm not seeing the point though. Who cares? MMOs are designed a certain way, yes. Again it's like getting made at a fighting game for having massive replayability. There's also a game that someone on this board spent literally thousands of dollars on to get a specific item, yet I never hear anyone bad mouthing Square or calling them evil predators.

I dunno what this hype about TF2 being better than Overwatch is coming from.

I played TF2 hardcore, like, I was not pro, but I was maybe two divisions below pro. Valve killed that game super SUPER hard. It changed from a serious game with an interesting competitive metagame, to a F2P hat collecting game (which is around when I quit).

Oh also, TF2 never had anything like matchmaking, leagues, any of that stuff that Overwatch has to encourage competitive play.

I haven't been following Overwatch too closely, but at a glance it looks a million times better managed than TF2.

Oh, don't get me wrong--TF2 defintely jumped the shark. But the overall base gameplay of Overwatch, which is centered around ultimates, is a lot less interesting to play or watch--sort of like if everyone had an uber/kritz in TF2.

There are other issues I have with the game, but they're a little harder to articulate-- mostly related to visual feedback, which TF2 did an amazing job at (and I'd argue still does a better job at despite all the hats).

Sure but 2008-2010ish TF2, and even later with whitelists and custom rules for better competitive play... Overwatch doesn't event compare in terms of team play and expressiveness of individual gameplay and overall strategy.

AND there's no Spy, which I guess technically makes the game "better", but it feels more shallow. Lots of stuff in Overwatch is like that. It's better in 90% of ways, but without that last 10% it doesn't have that lasting grip.

Yeah, that's certainly the argument some of my friends had against Overwatch, and I respect that. In some ways Overwatch is like a first person MOBA, and I totally understand if you dislike MOBAs.

That's kind of just the game they chose to make, though. For the game that they made, they've done a much better job of running it, maintaining it, and promoting the esports scene than Valve's garbage fire of TF2 mismanagement.

If you hate it so much why the fuck are you still playing it?

Also, as many missteps as Blizz has made it's still the company that released D3 (a fun game in it's CURRENT state), Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm... All of which are decent to good, IMO.

Releasing an outsourced mobile game doesn't suddenly make people "realize" all of those games they've had many years to digest were bad all along.

Ehh, Blizzard still has the ability to put out great games (see Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Overwatch), but the influence of Activision is definitely being felt with that Diablo mobile game announcement.

The funny part is the classic game team is the one part of Blizzard that is still delivering high quality. Starcraft Remastered was amazing, and War3 Reforged also looks great. I know some people were bitching about some of the recent War3 balance changes, but that's typical for the 'competitive' scene in any online game. Watching the classic game team lead on stage for the War3 announcement, you could tell he felt passionate about what he was doing, which is what is missing from the rest of the company these days.

This means exactly nothing since the game is purely luck based. If your win rate is >50% you must be luckier than other people! Congrats!

I mean, for what it's worth, I've watched Ulti play, I've played against him, and he's a solid player.

Half the time I watch him he's also playing decks that I stopped playing cause I didn't like the RNG aspect of them (cards that only trigger when other cards haven't been drawn from your deck).

I kind of agree with him on some of these criticisms--I hope that they hall of fame Mind Control Tech, and they never do Recruit or Spiteful Summoner type effects again.

I kind of disagree with other complaints he has. Like "my opponent drew two of their four board clears." Yeah, that's an aspect of every card game I've played, and not even that lucky for your opponent. Hearthstone does a better job than MtG with board clears IMO, as there's usually ways to build boards and make trades such that you have more stuff survive board clears (whereas MtG board clears tend to be "destroy all creatures").
