Could've just been Chris if he wanted to do that. Pretty sure it's just Frisk but with some trick about the F.

Someone wanna tell me what happens in a pure pacifist run? The very first battle after you have all three characters, Susie one-shotted the first monster. I always like to Check every monster first time I see it, and I didn't expect it to die in one hit. Though it didn't die, it just ran away, so maybe it didn't count? In my ending The king tricked us into healing him and then attacked everybody, almost killed Kris until Susie managed to use Pacify on him and he fell asleep. Lancer says that all the monsters were rushing to the throne room because he told them you were fighting the king.

Lancer gets the monsters to revolt instead of the King being put to sleep. You then get to go around the castle and talk to everyone.

Well that sure was an ending. Crazy how a game with crude-ass SNES graphics can make you tense up.

I'm really curious to see where Toby goes with this alternate universe and whether he'll tie it directly into the Undertale story at all. Someone suggested it's Chara who is messing with alternate universes, but I wouldn't discount Asriel's involvement either. He had that speech during the final battle of Undertale's pacifist run which was all about how he wanted to keep playing with you, and here's this elaborate alternate reality where Asriel got to grow up with his human brother, and that brother ends up having an adventure with Asriel's alter ego? Definitely strikes me as a wish-fulfillment fantasy he might have, and this could be either a timeline he somehow made with his reality-bending powers, or just something that he's imagining.

I actually kinda hope this sequel(?) doesn't get too deep into the lore and keeps the connection to the original Undertale relatively ambiguous, because I think it has enough hooks of its own to be a self-contained story. I really liked Susie's arc in this episode, and there was some intriguing side story stuff too, like Noelle and her dad.

I would not at all be surprised if Sans is the exact same character as in Undertale. He didn't get a costume update, the supermarket is very clearly Grillby's hastily scrawled over, he "just moved here," and there's the banter in the dialogue option where you (as a player?) can say you remember him. Seems like Sans is totally aware of whatever is going on while making the bare minimum attempt at fitting in.

I'd expect the story is going to be similar to Undertale where it's largely self-contained but there are significant meta elements...its just that this time the meta elements can refer both to the player and the other game. But I'm really excited to see how Toby will make it all play out, and if he'll account for people who may not have played Undertale before playing Deltarune.

Yeah. Took me two attempts and I REALLY lucked out at the end of the second. Everyone was down except Ralsei on the turn I had to Pacify. I don't think it was bad as the Genoside fights but it was so sick. It really shows off the strategic little quirks of the battle system. There must be a save import system too, otherwise the reward is pointless.

Can you win without the whole party? I was under the assumption you had to hypnotize until they gave up. Never actually beat it.

(Not that you can do anything substantial, since it's locked in the cage, but you can definitely move it around a little bit."

you can just deplete jevil's hp too and you get a different item after the battle for doing it that way. it's probably a bit tougher since attacking doesn't help you survive at all.

Toby is just the most wholesome person. I really hope he can find a team that he can work well with and bring his amazing ideas to life. Truly wish the best for him and this game.

Everything he said makes sense practically though. But then again, he is an absolute master of surprise. It was the main emotion in Undertale and Deltarune has like 10x stronger surprise (not just the ending either, every bit of this was insanely shocking every step of the way). I don't want to say he's lying necessarily, but I think he is definitely cultivating more surprise for us.

Having read Toby's remarks about the game, it does seem that it really was a demo (my bad for thinking otherwise; it's a substantial enough demo to be treated as a short game, though) so if you don't wanna play the demo I guess wait? But you'll be waiting a while!

I guess it's a demo from a guy who really likes who try to do big projects alone.

It can be both an AU and connected to the first game. Not to compare everything Toby does to Homestuck, but one of the major plot points in that is very similar. I do think he's doing some misdirection about the connections, particularly Chara and probably Sans. Though I guess it's possible that Kris is his own character that is also a sociopath when we aren't controlling him.

The team thing worries me the most honestly. Development slows to a crawl when you add people, especially when you were solo before. 5-7 years before release would not be unsurprising.

That depends. Work has an efficiency curve. At first adding people makes it more efficient, but after a while it starts getting less efficient as it becomes harder to distribute the workload between the workers.

Toby should be way below the optimal point right now. So he should benefit from getting a team.

It's flipped in game dev in my experience. You slow down a ton when you add new people because the entire workflow changes. But when, if at all, the kinks are figured out, having more people lets you do way more and faster. In practice though, it takes the same amount of time, just the scope is larger.

Toby definitely needs helps for this, but I don't know if he can manage a team. Most great designers can't really. It's a whole different skillset, and it necessarily means stepping away from doing the stuff that you love to do yourself.

Yeah hopefully he can find smart, trustworthy people to manage the project if that's not his strength. I think of Lab Zero and how none of the "big" names on the team driving the creativity there (Mike Z, Kinuko, Ahad, Persona) are the project manager or CEO and that's worked out decently for them

I played through this. I plan to replay it, mess around a bit, do the secret boss, but I have thoughts.

It was enjoyable. I liked the new battle system a good amount and can easily see how it could be expanded upon. Sparing is in a weird place right now and I don't know how Toby plans to handle it. Everyone is already sold on the gimmick of not killing enemies, but you do kind of want to allow players to do some fighting now.

The cast was good. Susie was by far the best, and I really enjoyed her story. I wish they did a bit more with how she was being treated by those around her, but maybe that'll be saved for the full game. It was touched on a bit still, could go farther.

I didn't like the ending at all. Gaster, whatever, we weren't getting away from him after all of those secrets Toby put in. That can go places. Chara, however, should not be here. Chara doesn't need to be here. He did his thing in Undertale and that is sufficient. He's just not very interesting. It didn't help that the ending was completely divorced from anything else that happened, so it didn't have the impact that it could have. I don't think that was well thought out.

I'll look forward to what this becomes eventually, hoping that it does actually become a full game, and that Toby follows through with his desire to tell a different story from Undertale. I liked those parts of it a lot.
