The mobile/steam version of the game is assy. Not just the new graphics, but there are bizarre tiling errors in the map graphics, and leftover useless mobile UI even in the PC version. It's a terrible way to experience the game.

The GBA version is really great. Especially because of the improved translation. The SNES script is serviceable, and obviously has a lot of nostalgia attached, but there are so many plot elements and important characterization that ended up getting lost. The music took a hard hit, but there are fan patches that fix that.

The evasion stat does nothing, because of programming errors - all attacks are calculated with magic evade. (Blind doing nothing is directly related to this, I think.)

Yes this. And it was hilarious. Mainly because on every one of my many playthroughs when I was young I would keep Shadow in my party at all times because his evasion stat was the best and I could equip him with further evasion boosting stuff. I was so proud of that 500+ evasion Shadow. No idea how i never realized it wasn't helping!

Blind does almost nothing. The one case where it does do something is situational and related to a character you don't have yet. Since Blind pretty much does nothing, effectively Goggles do nothing as well.

So wait, is blind the same thing as dark? That's what goggles prevent. I remember in the Magitek Research Facility, I had gotten the dark status a lot and I ran out of eyedrops to cure it near the end. I beat it with Celes still having dark and yeah, I remember not noticing any difference in her attacks.

"In this world are many like me who've killed their emotions. Don't forget that."

Update time. Made a lot of progress tonight!

Before heading to the sealed gate, I explored pretty briefly around the world map. Mainly I went to Kohlingen thanks to GMUN's teasing of it! Found out more of Locke's backstory. Man another memory loss trope in the same game? That's overkill! I didn't find the story of him and Rachel all that compelling (compared to other stuff in the game), honestly, though the father's anger at Locke was pretty heavy. After the flashback scene with Rachel pushing Locke out of the way of a collapsing bridge, I tried talking more to that weird dude who's watching over her, but he just laughs and says his herbs are keeping her in a suspended state. Uh, this guy is bizarre. Maybe I come back here later with an item or something to find out more.

Afterward, I made my way to the dungeon before the sealed gate (can't remember if this had an actual name?) and hot damn, I died twice in a row right off the bad. Difficulty spike time! Buuut I found out it wasn't near as bad as I thought at first. I was using Terra's morph ability and uh, she attacks my other party members when doing so? And then the same thing was happening when I tried to use an esper with her. Weird. Not sure what I need to do to stop that from happening or if I simply can't for now. Once I found out to simply not do either of those things, this dungeon became infinitely easier. Still some pretty tough enemies in here compared to before, but now all of my party members are learning lots of magic and not just Terra has cure. Plus, Terra + Gold Hairpin and half MP usage = way more curing power anyway!

This dungeon was cool, containing some pretty neat puzzles and all those damned moving bridges. I think I maaay have missed some treasure, because there was this one switch inside a treasure chest that I could not figure out what the hell it did. Got to the end of the dungeon and all these espers came flying out and the party decides to go back. At this point though, I went back to that treasure chest switch to mess around some more and still couldn't figure out exactly what it did. But I leveled up like crazy, so I didn't feel like round 2 in the dungeon was a waste at all.

We get back to the airship, the newly released espers start attacking it, and we crash land close to Vector. We travel to Vector and uhhh, the Empire suddenly wants to be all buddy buddy with us. Yeah, this doesn't seem right. We have a feast and there's this fun little minigame where I have to talk to as many soldiers as possible. I quickly equip the sprint shoes and talk to 21, which I think is every single one. Didn't even have to use save states or rewind, aww yeah.

The banquet scene was pretty neat and definitely unnerving. Emperor Gestahl is trying to be super genuine but yeah, it definitely seems like he's up to something. They've imprisoned Kefka though and dude is pissed. Gestahl apologizes for Kefka's actions, including the poisoning of Doma, and we form an alliance...for now. As we leave, a soldier there tells me that because I talked to so many other soldiers, they removed their troops from both Doma and Figaro Castle. Not sure what this means for me, but cool!

Locke and Terra decide to team up to go to some place called Crescent Island. And hey, it's Shadow and Celes! Celes is all giving the silent treatment to Locke for doubting her earlier and thinking she was still acting as a spy for the Empire. During a scene at night, Locke gets out of bed and tries talking to Celes again, but she runs off. Later on the boat, another night scene has Terra opening up to General Leo. There was some kinda cringey dialogue about love here, but it was saved by Shadow's aforementioned quote at the top. Good job redeeming this moment, Shadow!

We make it to the continent where Crescent Island is somewhere off of and the adventure continues.

E: Aaand I just realized that the land I'm at probably is Crescent Island itself.

STATZ:

Terra: Lv 25
Locke: Lv 22
Shadow: Lv 22

But my party during the dungeon consisted of Terra, Edgar, Sabin, and Setzer. Pretty sure my levels for them are as follows

Edgar: Lv 25
Sabin: Lv. 26
Setzer: Lv 26

Or it was something like that! I know they were all at least 24 and I think there were two at 26. And my current time is 16 hours and 28 minutes.

Not really. All it takes it fighting one random enemy with Shadow in your party and being unlucky enough. I think there are plenty of people who lose the dog and don't even realize it, they just sort of notice that it hasn't been appearing anymore

speaking of the Genji Glove, I forgot to mention... waaay back at the Returners hideout w/Banon, you could've gotten one if you said "No" to Banon as Terra 3 times, instead of saying yes to him right away or before then

There's also a rare chance of stealing them from Dragons in an upcoming dungeon (12.5% chance that the item a Dragon has is a Genji Glove)

as for the Gestahl Banquet

Nope got both the Genji Glove and the Atma Weapon! Have them both equipped on Celes at the moment so she actually has a dope physical attack -- commonly doing like 700 to 800 damage with both hits -- and I don't have to always use her magic anymore. But thanks for the tips about stealing from the dragons! I would've likely gotten one incidentally anyway because I use Locke's steal all the time (got dat Sneak Ring), but now I'll be even more sure to get one.

Oh man, at least TC isn't the type who would search everywhere for items.

I mean, depending how random it is, this might not be the type of area I'd be exploring. If it's just some completely inconspicuous part of the world map that looks the same as everywhere else...probably not. The thing is, this game has very frequent random encounter rates on the overworld that might deter such exploration, at least if I had to be on land.

But you bet your ass I'm taking my airship all over this map.

Alright TC, what you want to avoid is a spell named Rippler. What it does is exchange statuses between characters. Because of some bad programming, Shadow's dog is considered a status, so if it hits Shadow, it will steal the dog from him permanently.

So don't let Shadow be hit by Rippler, and reset the game if he does.

Naw, it's just the Cave leading to the Sealed Gate or whatever. I often refer to it as the Sealed Cave even though this is obviously inaccurate.

I was using Terra's morph ability and uh, she attacks my other party members when doing so? And then the same thing was happening when I tried to use an esper with her. Weird.

That shouldn't be a thing. Morph doesn't mess with Terra's command input. Did an enemy Confuse/Muddle her after you entered the command? That would make it target the wrong side (although most Espers abort if they target the party).
