I nominated it because it's a renowned trope in writing. Usually you reserve it for a moment when a character does something particularly pointed that makes you go, wait, what???

One of the most classic examples is Neville Longbottom slaying Nagini. Neville's basically a nobody for the entirety of HP, and then in the final book he rears up and does something dramatic. The only downside to this example is that you don't much see what he does, unlike, say, the confrontation between Bellatrix and Molly Weasley.

It can also certainly be a character who's also a bad-ass to begin with, if they do something really memorable either in the scope of their character or the overall series. In Wheel of Time when Lan kills Demandred after several other characters who are accomplished bladesmen fail, and actually walks away from it, that certainly qualifies as well.

Unsurprisingly, final books of series are rife with choices.
