What if the closed restaurant charges, like, an overtime uphike on the food they serve so they don't mind?

I wish. $50 plus one of them was a slob. Talking with food in his mouth, waving his half a cheesesteak appetizer and burger with fries for lunch around. Cleaning up, you'd think a small child just ate.

It sounds true

I could tell you about the time, while bartending, a drunk angry couple came in, she wanting to drink but unservable, he wanting her not to drink and being a bit to too aggressive about it. Then how I denied her, checked on her safety, calmed him down from angry drunk to over zealously concerned to husband that was just trying to keep her safe. They left calmly, holding hands.

I could then also tell you how my drinking buddy, the casino blackjack dealer, that graduated from Johnson and Wales, was completely blown away by how I handled the situation. His words were "Beyond what they can teach a person". My other friend and cousin-in-law, who also witnessed the event, both agreed with him.

It was really a work of art, from my body language, tone, demeanor and choice of words to watching them walk away lovingly.

But why? It's not like you'll believe it. Negative people have a hard time believing true, positive things actually happen. I pray for you.

Not 100% sure but I thought there's the actual closing time when the lights are off and everyone leaves and then there's the "we no longer accept customers" time. I rarely go in that late but I assume the time on display is just the "we no longer accept customers" time. Don't the workers usually stay a bit after the doors are locked to cleanup?

Most companies won't allow their servers to say anything to campers. Honestly it's one of the rudest things you can do. People always say 'well I paid and they're getting paid so tough', but fact is that they're not getting paid anymore. When a waiter gets a paycheck it's taxed until it reads 0.00

Part of it is the restaurants fault though, as you shouldn't seat new customers when you are getting close to closing time OR you should pay employees to work at least 30 minutes after closing.

Now if you get paid in tips and there is just 1 or 2 customers staying afterwards, and especially if they do not actually tip you....that is extremely rude I agree. I also realize not everywhere is like Washington where you get base min wage + tips (so $11 hour here).

Even here though I have a friend who literally disregards his base pay as non-existant and RAVES about customers not tipping him as much. Dude gets $300+ a day in tips and complains sometimes, it's crazy.

If your getting paid less then min wage though, and your employeer makes you stay after closing, you should at least get a pay hike to normal min wage for that time or something. Course, if your like my friend you will consider that worthless lol.

Depending on the restaurant and the quality, don't the head chef usually have some pull? Of course not to the degree of being "part-owner" but I would assume some influence. Granted I assume this only applies to high end restaurants and not something like BJs, Yardhouse, or other mid/lower end restaurants.

Kinda confused by this. If a restaurant is closed to customers at 10pm and workers stay another hour for the late comers and then maybe another hour to cleanup and finally leave at 12am. Regardless of when they leave they're only paid for their shift unless they get OT?

In this case shouldn't the restaurant either A) adjust shifts to account for late arrivals and the actual time the restaurant is close close or B) stop accepting new customers X minutes before the public closing time?

I read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and I vaguely recall him writing about the different type of owners. One in particular are the owners who know little to nothing about running a business or restaurant and simply just writing the checks to so speak. In some cases this is fine because said owner leaves the managing to the manager/head chef while in some the owner tries to take control and the inexperience kills the restaurant.

I keep hearing conflicting reports from friends who are waiters/cooks.

The cooks pretty much universally agree that tips suck for them, they often just get 10% of the total (counted) tips spread between all non-waiters, if that. From what I hear they often are lucky to get an extra $20 a day. This sounds like a pretty horrid deal to me honestly, and totally unfair. This is especially true as it sounds like most waiters take the cash tips themselves and don't count them, so it's the tips on cards that get shared mainly.

Waiters though vary greatly in their description, most baretenders and waiters at places that serve alcohol are very happy with tips and make way more then most other part time jobs...often needing to work 2-3 days only and still take home way more then most people working 40-50 hours a week.

Others who work at places like Denny's or Shari's, Applebee's etc, are not as jubilant when describing their job and tips. Biggest factor seems to be how busy the place is where they work, the cost of the food, and if the establishment serves alcohol.

Seems from what I have heard that many drunk people tip way more...not always, but a tip of $20 happens sometimes for meals that cost half that.

I personally like to socialize, I'm friendly, I LOVE food and would actually have liked to have been a waiter. I'm not too old to try it sometime honestly, and I may still. I wanted to be a cook though, but in my area cooks get min wage or there about ($11 an hour) and no or a very small portion of the tips. This seems extremely unfair to me, so even though I enjoy cooking I would not do that job and work twice as many hours for less money as the wait staff.

I thought tax was a percentage of your paycheck. And if so, this doesn't make any sense...

That could be hard. Especially since you may not get late customers everyday. One night, you may get late customers that stay for an hour after you close. And another night may have the last customers leave before closing time. They should just have regular hours where they are paid for the time they are there. And they just get more hours (which is more money) in the end...

Because it is ok?

People go to a restaurant to sit and have a meal - not to be rushed out.

Don't like your job? Get a different, but don't complain about the people who literally pay your salary.

Where do you think the money for your paycheck comes from? The Paycheck fairy? No, from those consumers buying a meal at your restaurant. if you close at 11:00pm, and someone comes at 10:55pm, you have no right to complain.

Well, if it says the restaurant is open until 10, but they stop serving new customers earlier, the business is technically still open. They just won't serve you. People will get mad because you didn't serve them even though you were open. If you turn the sign off early, people then think you closed early even though you just turned off the sign because you weren't serving new customers. But they'll still get mad...
