I think it's both. You can do things to become happy and then do more things because you are happy.

See, doing some things can help make me happy and/or sustain the happiness. And because of that happiness, there are other certain things - social ones - I can do that I would fail to if I were not happy.

I really do think it's an equal measure here.

I would say it's the latter for me. Most often I say things like "I do whatever makes me happy." Seems to align with that statement.

An end for pretty much everyone. People only care about themselves. And they're never satisfied. They always want more. As a result people are very spoiled nowadays imo. Capitalism facilitates it, to be fair. Capitalism is all about that horserace mentality

The result will hardly change substantially, I might as well give closing comments. As usual, the question in the poll masks greater questions, and hoping to find those who could see through that. While it is encouraging a fifth of the board is not falling for consumerism, I expected a bit more. This is, after all, a board of "nerds," people who in theory should be a tad above the general populace. Alas, I am not convinced the results would be much worse if I asked random people. In the last decade or so, I have come to realise that a lot of people who appear intelligent are in fact hopelessly blinded and stunned into total submission by the powers pushing materialism, even more so than seemingly simpler, poorer people. A chilling realisation for sure, but I suppose the fight for freedom was never meant to be easy.

You cannot spend your life chasing happiness, that's chasing ghosts. Happiness is a state of being, not a goal. A journey, not a destination, as the saying goes. The truth remains that we need to be happy in order to be able to achieve great things in our lives. Happiness is the foundation we step on in order to thrive, to contribute to our own never-ending self-improvement, to our family, our society and our people. Life is not given to you solely for yourself and your own sake. Life is given to you so that you can raise happy children who will become productive members of your people, and to also otherwise contribute to your people's success. Of course, you must always work to also improve yourself, but that's not the end. That's a means so you can do a better job uplifting your people.

While I am more human-centric than you, I completely agree that we should protect and exist in harmony with nature. We must not pollute it with our useless junk... To me, the debt to society originates, simply put, in that we wouldn't have these comforts we enjoy in our lives if not for the blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors. We owe it to them, and to our children, to at the very least preserve, and hopefully improve our world even further. For that, we must preserve our freedom. Materialism is a sure way to lose freedom, as you become a slave to the material. Only as fully-aware spiritual beings can we retain our freedom.
