https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-08-10/american-workers-just-got-a-pay-cut-in-economy-trump-calls-great

President Donald Trump has presided over an accelerating economy and the lowest unemployment in years, but American workers still arent seeing it in their wallets.

U.S. average hourly earnings adjusted for inflation fell 0.2 percent in July from a year earlier, data released on Friday showed, notching the lowest reading since 2012. While inflation isnt high in historical terms, after years of being too low following the 2007-2009 recession, its recent gains are taking a bigger bite out of U.S. paychecks.

Inflation has been climbing and wage growth, meanwhile, has been flat as a pancake, said Laura Rosner, senior economist at MacroPolicy Perspectives LLC in New York. In a very tight labor market you would expect that workers would negotiate their wages to at least keep up with the cost of living, and the picture tells you that theyre not.

U.S. unemployment at 3.9 percent in July was near a 50-year low and a core measure of inflation that excludes food and energy prices has pushed to 2.4 percent, the highest reading in almost a decade. But wages are just not keeping up and part of the reason is probably a lack of bargaining power on the part of U.S. workers.

Ryan Sweet, an economist at Moodys Analytics Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said given that inflation has been low in recent years, the sense of urgency hasnt been there to negotiate for higher wages. In the post-recession labor market, workers have forgotten how to bargain.

As the labor market came back, workers were just happy to have survived, Sweet said. They value their job security more than asking for a higher wage.

What will determine real wages in the coming months is not inflation as much as what happen to wages, he said. I do anticipate nominal wage growth picking up which should help drive up real wage gains over the next few months.

It's on them to negotiate their worth or acquire skills to enter a new field. Don't be mad that Walmart isn't providing them with a 3 story house and 2 cars for entry level work.

Yup sure have. You work for about 4-6 months learning multiple departments or front and back, how to open and close. Show ambition and show you have value as employee. Then you go and let managment know you need to be compensated for it and don't be scared to leave. Follow through and you will get the raise. The one time I didn't I got a call 3 days later. You don't believe it because you're too scared to try it.

I worked for them not because of them.

So the article is saying that Americans largely don't care about their wages enough for them to negotiate or relocate or do any of those things that accelerate wage growth?

More like the GOP has done everything they can to kill Unions and prevent workers from being able to negotiate.

It happens. I did it at one point, and got two people fired because i ended up doing their jobs too on an almost daily basis while they fucked off, at a retail place.

Negotiated, was about to get denied, brought that up and told my boss it was basically my routine now. He checked in to it. I got a pretty damn big raise and they got canned.

Yeah, that's because employers have been stomping on American workers for decades and during the interview process way too many employers will turn you down for just mentioning the wage.

Yup I absolutely did.

Again I learned quickly how to go above and beyond because that would be the leverage I needed to gain a higher wage.

I started as a 16 year old fryer. In two months I learned how to run both the grill and also bun prep. In the following 2 months I learned to close down the store, run a register, and prep all the salads, soups, condiments, etc; for the next day.

After 4 months I went to the manager and told her that I had learned all these skills and was reliably on time and hadn't called in like every other high school worker had been. I wanted my yearly review and raise now since I had learned the skills that demanded the higher wage. I was currently getting minimum wage and I could get another job that payed the same within the week.

I started there at $5.25 and after 2 years, my senior year of high school, I had negotiated all the way up to $9.80

She gave it to me and I stayed for another 2 years. I had done it once and realized every wage is negotiable and did it again at both Sears and a local Supermarket I worked for in College.
