It is kind of an odd policy when you think about it. People that are shoplifting because they are poor and can't afford something are going to end up getting arrested while people that are stealing just because they are jerks can pay the penalty.

Id rather they just be prosecuted

Businesses shouldnt be dictating punishments for crimes, we have elected legislators and judges for that. I dont see how Walmart could even enforce this

10x seems WAY too harsh. Start at 2x.

If the amount is set low, it's not much of a deterrent. And for small ticket items, 10x would still be a small amount of money.

A lot of those items are also targeted for resale value and/or ease of theft. Baby formula is a high-ticket item and used in drug production. So technically that's a third category right there, professional thieves.

Yeah a lot of it is stolen just because they know some people need it for babies and they know they can trade it for easy money or drugs

Same with laundry detergent. Its expensive and people have to buy it, so they know they can get a quick turnaround on it

Honestly the people in the drug business that are at the level where theyre the ones cutting the drugs are making so much freaking money that I doubt theyre bothering risking complications of theft just to save a small bit of money on formula, they probably just have a few people go buy what they need with cash.

Exactly. If youre cutting coke with baby formula Id hope your return on the product is enough that you wouldnt be stupid enough to risk shoplifting it.

The only reason I even know how expensive baby formula is is because I bought a bunch of it for my buddy when he had his kid. That shit is no joke.

Almost like speeding accidentally when you're poor versus on purpose when you can just head over to registry and pay your fine that day. It only hurts the poor people and there should be better discretion.

And yeah, the guy stabbed the security guard and he bit at them, but the (news) video explains that there should be professionalism at the same time. The one security guard slams the guy onto his face, the one stabbed punches him repeatedly and then the first punches the guy in the face again. It can be argued that it was warranted, but really, over what looks like nothing? (Theft under five.) He didn't even get away with it. Looks like more trouble than it's worth. He's already outside. Call the cops. Now loss prevention is busy and anyone else can be stealing inside that much easier.

I was an overnight manager at a Walgreens in Chicago so I saw a lot of theft. Most commonly stolen items from our store:

Liquor
-Pretty obvious for the reasons on that one

Prilosec/Heartburn Medicine
-Easy to grab an entire shelf and sweep it into your backpack. They sell these to mom and pop stores for a few dollars and the store sells them for a few dollars cheaper than retail in major stores. Eventually we had to start putting every box in individual locked containers

Baby Formula/Pedialyte
-Same reasons as the Prilosec but also sometimes out of necessity.

Laundry Detergent was not stolen very often because we had caps on each bottle and it's hard to steal giant jugs of that stuff. Our cheap headphones/phone chargers were also stolen sometimes but not often. We had them locked on the shelf but it was super easy to just rip the cardboard open or pull it off. Other items were stolen occasionally but if we had a shady person in the store we would monitor the top 3 above.

Again, it depends on what's being stolen. If it's a kid grabbing a candy bar, he likely has $10 or $15 on him to pay that fee. Otherwise he'd call somebody to get the money. If it was a big ticket item, well, I believe that at least some Wal-Marts have a payday loan function.

While he could have phrased that better, I imagine most people know what he meant. That aside, I imagine Wal-Mart would need to still be involved in the proceedings if the cases went to trial since they'd need things like testimony.

If anything, might this just make shoplifters more aggressive in trying to get away? I'd hate for employees to feel obligated to stop someone from leaving especially since they're not legally allowed to detain anyone.

A fellow Scout leader is a manager at Party City and said they're not allowed to detain or stop anyone. Best they can do is report it to the police and warn/ban the person. If said person comes back, best they can do is call the police again even if said person repeatedly shoplift.
