I get that it's a very impressive technical spectacle in terms of the SNES, but it has absolutely no emotional impact whatsoever, it's not connected to any characters (unless you think Celes has an arc about stage fright or something) and it changes nothing in the plot.

Yet it's often referred to as this amazing moment that is the climax of that entire game

what gives?

I think in general for its time its viewed as a nice change of pace from the uptight rigid formula of what RPGs typically do. Its also more memorable than the rest of the game

It's a decent scene with good music, but I agree that it isn't as mind-blowing as people seem to think. The best part was dealing with Ultros during it.

It's the first moment in a game for a lot of people that didn't involve killing something (even though that does happen)

Well I experienced it at the time and I can't say that's necessarily all of it because yeah it's just a thing among dozens of better scenes in the game for me. I don't dislike it or anything and it is memorable, but any reaction more passionate than "yeah that was a cool part of the game" is beyond me.

- great music
- great characterization
- fun villain
- literally nobody on the planet refers to it as "the climax of that entire game", it's still very much an introductory phase
- "no emotional impact whatsoever" is a completely false statement

Y'know how shows sometimes will take an episode to have a throwaway adventure that's a lot more light-hearted than the standard fare; the kind of episode you can easily skip and not lose anything (or much of anything) important plot-related? But you don't skip because it's just a lot of fun to watch?

The Opera House is that episode.

Actually I legit don't see why there would be a particularly emotional impact in the scene

They're performing a play to try and trick a kidnapper like where's the emotional resonance supposed to be. I guess excitement is kind of an emotion and the scene is kinda exciting but I somehow don't think that's what you're getting at when you say "emotional impact"

But *shrug

I didn't think it was anything especially special when I first played it, but it's still really cool and the music is great.

Also, I went to go see it performed live earlier this year, and that was absolutely incredible.

It's pretty much the first (only?) scene in the game where Celes stops being a mopey asshole and is convinced to do something fun. Also Ultros tries to drop a cartoon anvil on her

It's incredibly different in tone and it's really showy. I really like it. It's not the climax of the story but one of its most unique episodes.

Half the reason why is simply the fact that Squaresoft decided to do an opera with 16-bit technical limitations.

And then there's the fact that Celes tossing the bouquet reflects her trying to kill herself later in the game as a sad reprise of the opera theme plays.

I kinda like it, but I can't stand the tinny voices in it. Aria's a beautiful piece of music once you remove its voices, but those kill it for me. Despite liking the scene for thematic reasons (especially on replays when you know more about Celes's character arc), I just kinda laughed it off the first time I played it, and that first impression sticks with me.

Ultros is always a good time, though.

Celes didn't have an arc about stage fright but she did have one about being cold and distant. You could tell from the way she talked that she didn't really open herself up to anyone. After being put in the acting role of Maria this changes and she lightens up and becomes a lot softer afterwards. So it is technically a significant event for her development, but it's probably not all that obvious in translation maybe.

Granted that's not really the reason why people make a big deal out of that scene. It was just novel for the time

First of its kind.

This.

The moment doesnt exactly stand up to the test of time, but consider that this was only the 3rd numbered Final Fantasy game released in the west. What would be the most choreographed moment in a Final Fantasy game that wed seen up to then? Probably Cid directing a buncha NPCs to upgrade an airship in FF4. The opera went pretty far beyond that and had an element of interaction with it.

At the time, I thought it was a really neat moment, but I also probably wouldnt have foreseen it being the most symbolic part of the game. Hell, I thought Kefka having a audible laugh made the game stand out a ton.

That and Edgar had a chainsaw which sometimes looked like a chainsaw and at other times looked like a pizza cutter. Badass. Some dude could suplex a train, too.
