So I bought Borat and am rewatching out of excitement for Who Is America?

Ten minutes into the movie, there's a scene in a montage where Borat is taking a shit beside the outside sign of Trump International Hotel and Tower. Little did we know he was working his way to this new show for over a decade.

So apparently Russia tried to sabotage French elections last year and that didn't work, in part because of watching the American shitshow and taking notes?

Hard to gauge the national mood in America

Are these indictments, showing almost beyond doubt now (if it wasn't already) that Russia did meddle in the election, or attempt to, provoking the appropriate outrage? Twitter is obviously pissed about it, and wondering why Trump is not taking Putin to task. It feels more definitive now, but I think without actual public outrage nothing will happen. I could sort of feel it with separating families at the border, if that makes sense, so it didn't surprise me that Trump actually changed something. But I don't quite feel it in the same way here.

Feels like people are just immune to this stuff now and no new reveal about Russia or anything is going to stir people into action

"No collusion!"

"Even if Trump didn't specifically collude, isn't it still important that Russia made direct attempts to meddle?"

"Fake news, no collusion!"

"But it isn't fake, there have been a bunch of indictments already and things are moving forward"

"Exactly, it's been a WHOLE YEAR already! Where is the proof?!? See! Fake news!"

"Yes, it's ONLY been a year. Investigations like this can take a long time and the fact that it's already moving so rapidly only proves that something happened. Don't we want to find out the truth regardless of who it implicates?"

.

That is what this conversation feels like to me every time i've had it lately. And I think at least some of them are with people who actually buy into this notion that the media is regularly fabricating stories.

And honestly if Trump is innocent then they should want a thorough investigation more than anyone else since it would just exonerate him. Even if we can prove that Russia took steps to undermine our elections it's not like it's going to change the results. It's not as though they actually managed to hack the polling stations on election day. The results that we got really happened and trump really won the election. He would still be the president. That isn't going to change even if we throw a few dozen people in jail for their part in the whole thing.

Idk, the whole thing is annoying. Which just makes it difficult to stay engaged in, which is the fucking sickest part about it because even the people who care just get so fatigued by everything that we can't even collectively stay as engaged as we need to be with this thing.

Impeaching Trump is such a big deal and he is such a central, dominant figure in news that short of definitive evidence that leads to his impeachment, nothing else matters. Despite the success it has already had, it seems only a direct tie to Trump actually matters at this point.

I think it needs to be understood that in the Republican psyche this is all just payback for Clinton because those are the terms they think in.

Republicans are literally still using Ted Kennedy's leadership of the opposition to Borks nomination to the Supreme Court as justification for stonewalling Garland.

To them that's still tit for tat and thats just how they think

I think there is value in promoting those who hold right wing views that don't think of everything in terms of partisan warfare because ultimately our country cant be good unless both parties are reasonable options for running the country. Ultimately that's not the case right now but the Rs only really tipped super hard this direction in 2010, though its been an undercurrent since Reagan.

This is why I find red sox and SephG to be utterly reprehensible as they only think in terms of the game.

But like I'd with 0 thought involved vote for Tom Bombadil.

at the risk of getting vituperated for defending red sox again, i'll point that he DID write in bernie, at least. but yeah, sephy definitely has a "the only thing that matters is my team winning no matter what" mindset.

muffin does, too. when people pointed out that he was insane for voting for mccain in '08 (because palin), he went "well what do you guys want me to do, vote for a democrat???" he basically admitted that if satan were the republican candidate, he'd still vote for him over the dem candidate.

Good to see we completely agree on this one. I'd also point out that, as far as I can see, the "mainstream" right wing views in the US these days seem to be nearly indistinguishable from alt-right, which is itself problematic (but that's also an entirely different conversation that I'm not up for right now).

I'm listening to the Putin-Trump press conference right now, and a reporter from Reuters asked Trump about his tweets complaining about our relations with Russia, and if he holds Russia accountable for anything they've done.

His response is literally

"We're both to blame, also btw, I beat Hillary so so easily. There was no collusion. The probe is hurting our relationship, think about how many nukes we have between us. Btw, the Democrats lost but they should have won because of the Electoral College is strongly in their favor, but we won by a lot and we did a good job."

I'm in a pretty poppin Right Wing Facebook group, to talk with people on both sides, argue about stuff, and see what Trump supporters think.

And it is insane, seeing his supporters literally saying things like (copy-pasted directly):

Politics. It seems like Trump is trying to make peace with everyone. How many friends have have you made by talking shit to someone's face lol? Plus our intelligence agencies are questionable at best. They fuck up more than they do good from what is documented. At the end of the day, trying to make old enemies into allies is better for the progression of the world as a whole I think. Not saying we have to like what they do, their government or their values. We need to get over ourselves. We overreact to literally every single time Trump farts. The world will continue to turn. It'll be okay.

You don't have enough information to make determination to trust them or not. If an intelligence agency can be trusted to do ONE THING, it's disguising intent. You think you have a bead on them? What about the rest of the world?
Who do you think has more information here? You or Trump?

Obama bowed to a leader who believes in Jewish genocide.

George Bush was openly friendly with leaders who had multiple human rights violation.

I could go on.

I get it, you're triggered Tony, but take the leftist goggles off for a minute and actually evaluate what happened. A politician, played nice with another politician.

Literally in response to me sharing the Joe Walsh twitter freakout and saying this:

I'll just leave this here.

Countless more prominent Right Wing people on Twitter asking what the fuck just happened. What does CLS (the group) think?

All I did was try and start a discussion, asking anyone to give their input, and almost across the board they're in support and defend mode.

It's truly scary.
