I've been in the mood for a JRPG recently, but I'm having trouble finding one that looks like it'll hit the spot. I played Ni No Kuni 2 a couple of months ago and it was fine, but I wasn't digging the characters very much.

I want a modern console or PC game, but old-school fantasy (not old school graphics though). Ideally something that hasn't gone overboard on the world building.

Thinking Tales of Zestiria or maybe Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, though I've never played a Ys game before, so I dunno how important that is? Dragon Quest XI looks good too, but I don't really want to wait until September to play something.

Anything come out recently that I'm overlooking?

I actually tried that, as I've owned a Steam copy for a while now, but I wasn't in the mood for it. It looks fine and I plan to play it some day, just not in the mood for it now. I did look at Trails of Cold Steel too, but I wasn't digging the school setting.

And it isn't? What is it then?

This made me think you were almost specifically ruling it out. World-building is huge in Trails.

Hmm...

Tales of Berseria is the better Tales option IMO.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ might work. (Falcom, same company as Trails and Ys. It's kind of a fusion of those two franchises + Persona)

As for Ys, it's more action-oriented - even moreso than Tales IMO. RPG elements definitely exist but it's not traditional by any means. Though I haven't played VIII yet so maybe it's a bit different?

I figured I'd get that if I liked Zestiria. I know it's generally considered better, but then I'll have something to look forward to.

Ah, I was really looking for a more traditional setting, than traditional gameplay. Xanadu sounds cool though and wasn't one I was aware of, so I might check that out down the line. Sounds like I should check out some gameplay videos of Ys first and see if it's my sort of thing.

Is it actually bad or is it just not great? Reviews seem to place it around 7/10, mostly because of simple characters and plot, which I think I'd be fine with.

I'd consider it the weakest Tales game I played, but a lot of that is comparison to other (better) Tales games. I'd say "not great, but not awful" and a lot of the issues that I at least have with it might not even register with you if you haven't played many Tales games.

I liked Zestiria. The story isn't very good, and it has an awful fetch quest at one point, but the cast was alright, combat was challenging, and it has one of the best soundtracks in the series. And the best final boss.

yeah that's fair, jrpg typically refers to turn-based stuff, which none of the tales games are, which is why i recommended it despite the classification issue

Anyway, with Zestiria - for me, at least - it's kind of like you have a series in Tales where I feel it can often put out titles in the 8 or even 9/10 range and then Zestiria comes along and is like a 6/10. In the grand scheme of things, that's not bad. Heck, it's above average! But in the context of the series it just feels... bad. (Xillia in this story is like... a 7/10)

Also since we're talking Traditional/Action and stuff... if I put them on the scale it'd look something like...

<--Old FF----Trails------------- | -----Tales--Tokyo Xanadu---Nier Automata--Ys----->
Turn-based/Traditional....................................... ........................................Action-based.

man i would absolutely not call zestiria above average. at best, it's entirely average

but it's just...there are so many better action rpgs. especially from the last few years. why bother with something that's entirely mediocre when you have some of the best games the genre has ever produced to choose from?

I totally agree there are tons of better action RPGs, I'm just saying that I wouldn't condemn Zestiria to the depths of awfulness. There's still quite a ways you could fall from where Zestiria is.

remember i said i felt Berseria was the better option here!

I bought Zestria and it was the worst purchase I ever made (pending how bad SO4 is)

Its somewhere between lunar dragon song and eternal sonata for just worst everything in a JRPG.

I would recommend against playing it even if you got the game for free.

Beseria however does everything right to such an extent its mind boggling. Characters are fun, story is good, gameplay and extra features are fun. Its probably one of the most well crafted jrpgs since the original xenoblade. I was floored that a tales game good even be that good.

It's mostly just the Japanese style and tropes that the vast majority of them have in common, one way or another. Fire Emblem is absolutely included in that style.

They're likable enough. Ys as a whole tends to focus a lot more on action than its plot/characters, but VIII made a decent attempt at covering both.

Combat takes place by you madly sprinting around and bumping into enemies.

Just the originals, the rest play more similarly to Zelda or something
