A buddy of mine had a speeding ticket for like 21 over and it was 600 plus. Now I got a move over violation on a tiny access road that was right before my exit (almost no time to get over and get back over before my exit... plus it was dark and I felt it was safer to just slow down instead of darting over and back real fast) that's 483 before I appear. Hope they reduce that a lot but this shit is robbery. Then she lied on the ticket and said that I was 4 to 6 inches away which I know is absolute bullshit. Maybe they have too many fucking cops on their payroll because that is fucking outrageous if they need to extort that kind of cash to function

They can only do so much to pull drivers over safely. At the end of the day, they're still stopped on the side of a highway, which is inherently dangerous no matter what precautions they take. Everyone else on the road therefore has a responsibility to slow down and pull over to help mitigate that danger.

OhhhJa posted...
almost no time to get over and get back over before my exit

In which case you can just miss your exit. You could also pull over to the side of the road yourself to wait for the cop to finish so you can safely take the exit. Both solutions are inconvenient, sure, but their safety is more important than your convenience.

Remember that she's going to have dashcam footage that was credible enough to issue the ticket in the first place. You, on the other hand, have admitted that it was dark, and coupled with the flashing lights of the car I would be far more inclined to believe that you misjudged the distance than that she lied on the ticket.

Speeding tickets are my favorite though, it's as though no one realizes how truly futile speeding really is.

Eww...I agree with OhhhJa on something. Feels icky...

Those fine amounts are obscene and the people cheering for them here apparently don't mind when those same fine amounts are levied on the poor who can't afford them and it places them in a spiral of debt.

JixHedgehog posted...

Cops literally use the laws as a money making scam, having one car pulled over and another laying in wait just to go after people who don't "sufficiently" slow down.

Yeah, that's fucking ridiculous. "Just come to a stop behind the parked cars and wait till the cop's done."
Maybe the cop can look before stepping out of the car, and as long as the cars are going slower, should be able to gauge when it's safe to exit.

Having dash cam footage, even from the cop can only help him or at worst make no difference. You think the cop wrote those violations on his/her ticket then is going to show up to court and press for harsher violations based on the footage? Most likely, if the footage doesn't match what was written down, it will have been "lost" or the dash cam "wasn't working that night."

Actually, I am strongly in favour of the idea of having traffic (and similar) fines being based on income instead of being a flat rate for everybody. As it stands, they're absolutely devastating for poor people (often resulting in a license revocation due to unpaid fines, and therefore impairment of their ability to work), while being a joke for rich people, which means they aren't working as they should be (that is, to discourage unsafe driving). Implementing such a system would get tricky, and would likely end up putting much of the burden on the middle class, as happens with taxes (the poor wouldn't contribute much, the rich would find loopholes to avoid having their income counted), but it'd be better than what's currently there.

That said, if you don't want a traffic fine, drive better. It's really not hard to avoid tickets. A ticket shouldn't destroy one's life, but that doesn't mean it's okay to get it in the first place.

Never thought I would so wholeheartedly agree with adjl, but this is true. I've never gotten a ticket and it's been nearly a decade since I've even been pulled over. Same goes for my wife. It's insanely easy to not get a ticket.

I've never had a single accident in 13 years. I was definitely not 4 to 6 inches away. Cops routinely lie on tickets. That law is meant to be for ridiculous scenarios... not for careful people in situations where you had someone pulled over in a dangerous area where it couldn't be reasonably expected to dart over and back. I will definitely fight this and prove by dashcam that she was full of shit.

I guess you guys think tickets should be millions of dollars though? If you break the law you should have to forfeit your house right... since you knew it was the law and all?

Except it was military law enforcement, so we enforced state and local statutes for traffic violations and since we were federally funded there was no incentive for revenue-based targeting. But defend it however you feel like.
