Normally red lentils. I'm always interested in good recipes. It's a bit hot out, so how well do lentils cook in an instant pot? I can stick that in our breezeway so I don't heat the rest of the house.

I only cook lentils in an instant pot

However you need green or brown

Red lentils are meant to be cooked into a sauce or something soupy not eaten on their own

I have neither green nor brown. My wife has purchased red lentils consistently, for use in soups and stuff. Red lentils are like little dirt flavored half-beans.

That won't change the fact that you've got the wrong lentils for what you want

You should be rinsing lentils (and grains and beans) as well and that cuts down on a lot of off flavors

Black beans do have a more versatility in how it can be prepared though. I like both but I'd never make hummus from lentils.

Whole chickens often go for 67 cents a pound.

chicken legs (my favorite) are normally 1.67 or so a pound and often on sale under 99 cents a pound.

At safeway, not the cheapest option by far, you can usually get chicken thighs/breasts (boneless/skinless) for 1.67$ a pound on sale or less (like right now).

Comparable pork prices are more expensive pretty much universally.

Super easy

Take 1 cup of sorted and rinsed brown / green / French lentils

Add 2 cups of liquid. I like water with some better than bouillon veg paste, bay leaves, and sweated onion. I like using miso paste too. Keep the liquid from being very salty. You just want to impart some flavors.

Cook 10 minutes manual. Release remaining pressure after 10 minutes. Stir. Salt as needed.

I like to add these lentils to stuffed peppers, mix them in rice, add them to sauces, or just have the lentils straight up with some sauteed mushrooms and vegetables mixed in. These lentils are really good with mushrooms and wild rice

I used the lentils last weekend to make vegan Bolognese and sloppy joes

It's super easy to remember. 2 parts liquid 1 part lentils 10 minutes manual and pressure release after another 10 minutes

Sorry for all the edits. I dunno what's going on with my dictionary

I thought pressure cookers would reduce time more significantly. For anyone else, you'll bring to a boil, reduce the heat and let sit twenty minutes.

They require much less energy to operate

They require no hands on effort

And if you're cooking larger quantities of food you don't need to increase cook time

The impressive time saving doesn't come in noticeably unless it's a food that takes a lot of time to cook.

Lentils takes me less time on the stove but I can put lentils in the pressure cooker, have a shower, make coffee, and do other things then they're ready

Nope. Nope. Nope.

1 cup of lentils only has 16.5g protein. 1 cup of black beans has 39g.

You're both...just...ugh

1 cup of prime rib has soooo much more protein (it's also more bioavailable then both), while at the same time having way more nutrients.

Seriously

I do regularly add a good pound of mushroom to lots of dishes but that's just because mushrooms are good. My protein is in the lentils and rice and... everything. The crazy thing is everything whole has protein. Get enough calories without adding oils and sugar and you will always get more than enough protein on a plant based diet

Water still takes time to boil and things take time to cool. Anything that has a long cook time does take much less time. Like you can make some great chili in under an hour start to finish from raw ingredients and it tastes as good as slow cooked all day. I love it for curries and stocks.
