I would predict it is because piggles gain more flavourful meaty goodness per dollar of time/effort/food put into them.

...

Which doesn't explain why newly hatched chicks thrown in a blender to make pink slimy nugs are so expensive

Well, the simple answer is that it isn't. Chicken is the cheapest type of meat. However, chicken and pork are going to be cheaper than beef because beef is more expensive to raise.

I wonder if that's just a regional thing. I'm in Alberta, beef country, and pork/beef are pretty close to the same price with pork being slightly cheaper... but chicken is the MOST expensive (excluding premium cuts of course)

That's just weird, considering that chickens don't require much space and their dietary requirements tend to be cheaper.

It's more expensive for boneless skinless breasts but cheap chicken cuts are cheaper than anything else. Turkey is down there

Aren't chicken eggs the cheapest form of protein pretty much everywhere? I mean, I like beans (not lentils, but black, kidney, garbanzo, greath northern, white, etc. Just not lentils) quite a bit, but eggs are almost free.

Seriously though, lentils suck. They literally taste like dirt. Meanwhile I can toss white beans into anything for a protein boost that doesn't ruin the flavor.

Sure, but there's more to it than that.

About 10 years ago, the price of beef skyrocketed over the course of a few years to nearly double what it was before, way ahead of inflation.
I've read this is because beef is becoming a lot more popular in China, and there's a billion fucking people there, so it created a huge gulf in supply vs. demand.

Makes sense, but has fuck all to do w/ the cost of raising cows. And it sucks....steak's my favorite food :(

Source? Everything I'm seeing says a cup of (cooked) black beans has about 16g of protein.

1 cup of cooked black beans is approximately 1/2 cup of uncooked beans.

You typically buy bulk beans in the dried form.

No. Guarantee they're not. I can get a pound of dry lentils for under a dollar. That's 25% protein by weight.

There seems to be a lot of various numbers thrown around the internet but all in all, both beans are equal in their nutritional value: https://versus.com/en/black-beans-vs-lentils

Black beans do have a more versatility in how it can be prepared though. I like both but I'd never make hummus from lentils.
