Sakurai prioritized bringing back every Smash character in history (including the likes of Pichu and Young Link), and due to this, there will be less newcomers added than there were with previous Smash games. The previous Smash games added on average 15 newcomers per game (in Smash 4's case, that's before DLC), so it's not uncommon for people to speculate that the number will be in the single digits this time.

It's proven to be rather controversial on the Smash board, since they feel that they're losing potential newcomers to bring back some of the least popular characters in the series (Young Link, Pichu, Squirtle, Ivysaur; the latter two even bring back Pokemon Trainer and tying Charizard back to the team). On the other hand, even those characters had their fans, and thus are happy to see them return after so long.

To be honest, two of the characters I want have no chance of being in the game before DLC (Spring Man and Rex + Pyra, whose games came out long after the project plan for Ultimate was completed (December 2015)).

Just give me either Decidueye or Mimikyu, and Dixie Kong and/or King K. Rool, and I'll be all set.

I would prefer new characters, but I don't mind everyone coming back. I know most people like it because their main is back. But I'm one of those people who doesn't pick a main before the game comes out, and I avoid my main from the previous game because that just seems really boring.

I try out every character and see which one I like the most, now most of them will seem very familiar. Even though I like new characters, I'm mostly excited for having a huge roster.

Sakurai made the right call. Smash's roster was nearly perfect with Brawl's release. Smash 4 managed to make it even better. There are no characters left that absolutely need to be in Smash.

I think it's a good idea. There are definitely plenty of characters they could have added, but bringing back everyone is playing it safe. Unless you're not a Smash fan at all, bringing back everyone plus a few new additions pretty much guarantees there will be something for you.

I love it, personally. I'm more concerned about what single player stuff they're doing. Some of that was really fun, like Break the Targets.

Some returning characters like Ice Climbers haven't been playable in 15+ years, and Sakurai confirmed that clones are getting re-works to make them more unique, so I'm fine with it. Getting Snake back alone is worth the price of admission, and the idea that we could have a Snake vs Cloud vs Bayonetta vs Mega Man vs Sonic vs Pac-Man vs Ryu vs Pikachu is, honestly, insane. Nobody could have predicted something like this a decade ago.

Really, where was this said? I really hope that's true, because that was my only gripe about this whole thing. Before the reveal, I figured that both of my mains from Smash 4 (Corrin and Charizard) stood little to no chance of returning for 5, so hearing "everyone's here!" was a huge deal for me. Thinking about the clones and semi-clones made me concerned, but if Sakurai and the team are going to try and rectify that by reworking them, then I'm totally on board.

We've already seen some things, like adult Link now has remote bombs instead of regular bombs, so we know that characters are being modified. I can't find the interview (it must have been youtube) where he talks about it, but he mentioned that a priority among returning clones is finding ways beyond changes to damage/speed to make them stand out more.

Yeah, I'm pretty salty that dumbfucks like Pichu, Daisy, Dark Pit and Lucina are still in while we still don't have several iconic Nintendo staples that are more than deserving of be included in the roster, i.e. King K. Rool, Isaac, Takamaru, etc. Although Ridley was a nice addition.

King K. Rool i'm almost confident is coming, especially now that Ridley is in (Sakurai specifically stated that Western demand got him in). It's a shame about Takamaru, though.

Isaac as well, even if Camelot themselves seem to give zero fucks about his series anymore.

Clones will always have an easier time getting through because they take less development time.

This is why I think Smash Ultimate will have Shadow instead of Tails or Eggman for example.

This is why I think Smash Ultimate will have Shadow instead of Tails or Eggman for example.

Shadow being a clone/Echo would be a waste of his Chaos Control abilities, which were previously demonstrated as his Assist Trophy effect.

i think it was definitely the right decision

at this point just about everyone that NEEDS to be in smash is already in so most additional characters i'd like (paper mario, banjo, rayman) would just be gravy

what i really think is more important for him to look at is gameplay feel and mechanics

Smash never should have dropped playable characters from game to game in the first place.

So I like everyone coming back, however, honestly...I don't care much about Smash's roster anymore unless it includes characters I really badly want in. Otherwise it's a lot of white noise that just makes me go, "...you put this in but not what I want?"

I am glad Ridley got in finally. Metroid needed that. But the characters I like, most badly want are...Midna, Scizor, and for a third party: Travis Touchdown.

I'd also be pretty stoked for Amaterasu from Okami.

So like, characters along the lines of Wii Fit Trainer and shit, I just feel the series losing me with additions like that.

The tradeoff isnt worth it. New fighters are inherently more interesting and valuable than returning fighters, especially the likes of young link.
