As a console, it's gotta be the Wii. It's open for debate I suppose but idk if I can be persuaded personally.

It sold very very well yes, but entirely on a gimmick. The Wii's hardware shortcomings basically set Nintendo behind the competition in terms of what their console actually is capable of. They really haven't recovered from that.

The Wii was severely hurt in its third party support past games that were entirely built around the motion control gimmick, and most of the motion control games were not great. The Wii also had pretty weak longevity - when the PS3 and Xbox 360 were fighting out to see who would win by the end of the generation, the Wii was sitting pretty at the top of the hill for total sales, but was looking pathetic in weekly/monthly sales.

I don't know what the consoles-to-software ratio is for the Wii but I can't imagine it was actually great. A lot of people bought the Wii for stuff like Wii Fit and Wii Sports and didn't buy much of anything else on it. Maybe Guitar Hero or Mario Kart.

Like the Wii was very successful but I think it really hurt Nintendo and set them up for the failure of the Wii U.

I totally understand people putting the wii last, but it has such an amazing neglected library that will never be ported onto other systems. The only reason it gets such a bad rap is because the crazy fun unique games got zero exposure. If the wii wasnt combined with nintendos phase of forcing motion controls when not needed (try playing animal crossing city folk now, its damn near unplayable) it would legit be a contender for the greatest console of all time

The problem is though that the library had the unique cool games only becasue of the controls.

My issue with the Wii was yes ultimately the controls...oh and the fact that the hard drive somehow got corrupted and ruined all of my saves after 2 years of ownership. After that happened I just kind of gave up on the system.

Wii easily has one of the greatest software libraries for Nintendo. Like I still prefer GC as it has more of my absolute favs on the console, but Wii is my biggest Nintendo library with a lot of good stuff in it.

In terms of console with the library of games I most want to revisit/explore the titles I never checked out...Wii is probably the weakest here. May be in fact weaker than Wii U.

They're all great though. And N64 currently leading the poll is an affront to my childhood, but I can kind of understand it.

Why would I need an excuse when the NES is inferior to newer systems by every objective measure? Graphics, sound, mechanics, etc. It's fine if you like it but it's not amazing by any means. It's outdated and bad by today's standards. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it though!

I'm not sure I would say the N64 has graphics which are objectively better than the NES.

There is an argument for the N64. keeping cartridges did cost Nintendo a lot, combined with other business practices that cost them the support of many of the most prominent third party producers which they to this day struggle with.

Of course, this is mitigated by the console having absolutely stellar first and second party games, but that goes for almost all their consoles.

A game is far more than a mere sum of superficial parts. Games with multi-million budgets, shiny graphics and effects like recent Call of Duties, Wolfensteins or Assassin's Creeds, fall behind when compared to even a mid-tier NES game, say A Boy and His Blob. They're completely forgettable and/or way past the prime of the series (we know very well that no Assassin's Creed will top AC2). They attempt nothing and achieve nothing. Not even fans of the series care about them as little as 1 year after they're released. It's a massive, monstrous waste of resources.

For a more recent example, there's a reason why Undertale is so popular.

Wtf the Wii U might be one of my favorites. Incredible digital library, incredible first party games, and not only that but it plays the ENTIRE Wii library.

Virtual Boy is obvious if included but I understand why it isn't.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure it's the N64.

-Cartridge format really held back the type of games it could get at the time
-Absolutely anemic third-party support even by post-SNES Nintendo console standards
-Almost entirely reliant on first-party games, but many major first-party Nintendo series from the NES/SNES aren't represented: no Metroid, no Mother, no Fire Emblem. There's also no 2D Mario.
-Goldeneye, one of the system's few marquee titles, hasn't aged very well (I'm told. Haven't played it in years). I'd argue Mario 64 hasn't either, but I know a lot of people disagree. That basically leaves Zelda. I personally love F-Zero X but it obviously wasn't a major release.

I think it's fair to say the Wii set the stage for the Wii U's financial failure, but the N64 honestly did the same for the GameCube, which sold only marginally better. (In both cases, I feel the worse-selling system was a significantly better one than its predecessor, but so it goes.) I personally put the Wii above the N64 because I'm a Mario and Fire Emblem fan.

Based on all factors included - exclusives, graphical capabilities for its time, controller, technical difficulties, influence, etc. - from best to worst:
SNES > NES > GameCube >>> N64 > Wii >>>>>> Wii U

The SNES was my first console. Without it, I wouldn't be into gaming. The NES was before my time; the only reason it has as many votes as it does is because of the younger voters that were not around to experience any part of it. It SAVED gaming - and its games are actually challenging in mostly fun ways that modern games lack. The GameCube is a vastly underrated machine with many great exclusives (though Symphonia is no longer exclusive to it). The N64 is what hooked me into gaming for good, but it had no third-party support, very few RPGs, an overall library that paled in comparison to the PSX, and a terribly designed controller.

Too early to judge the Switch. While it most certainly had an impeccable first year, it's uncertain how long it will hold for. The Wii also had a phenomenal debut but its later years were a slog. I can't think of a decent exclusive for the Wii in its last couple years that isn't Super Mario Galaxy 2. Skyward Snore is the worst Zelda - and that includes Four Swords. The Wii U was a disaster because of its tablet controller, zero third-party support, and graphics comparable to a launch Xbox 360. Nintendo also didn't care about developing for it all that much, which is why they ported many Wii U games to Switch.

Easily the Wii for me. It's 'innovative' controls were forced into a lot of otherwise great games and later got implemented into the Wii U and Switch. Leading to a need for most people to drop 60 bucks for a pro controller every console. It also inspired the Kinect and Playstation Move which were awful. On top of that it gave Nintendo a horrible reputation that they're just now getting out of.

Sure it had a lot of cool features and I'll always cherish my memories with the console, but its impact on gaming was pretty negative only a few years later.

Also to those saying the N64, sure the game library is really small, but it was revolutionary and literally made analog sticks a mainstay in gaming. Not to mention the graphics that look way better than the playstations which aged horribly

Playstation might have technically better graphics in terms of the tech itself, but in terms of aging, they're awful. I think ige they've got a 2D game it looks great, but the 3D is just trying so hard, it looks dated every time I play one now as opposed to the N64 which looks crisp and clean. But that probably just boils down to personal opinion/taste

i know the gamecube is loved among the more hard-core nintendo fans, but i have to call it the worst, mostly because it sold the least out of all the consoles on that list

even among hardcore fans, if not for melee i don't think many would look back on it so fondly
