Otherwise Lost Odyssey for Xbox 360 or downloadable for XB1. Can't overstate how fucking fun this game is, though the prologue/ch. 1 does drag on for a bit, as there is a long time before you hit the road and do more combat again.

Both are turn-based and both have at least 3-4 party members fighting at a time (LO maxes out at 5, not sure what the limit of combat participants in Octopath is since I just started, but it's definitely at least 3, possibly 4.)

Phantasy Star 1 has held up really well for a game its age. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on GBC isn't the most deep or replayable RPG, but it's one of those rare licensed games that is just sort of fun and interesting - it's worth gawking at at least once. And if you have access to a PS2 or 3DS, go for Dragon Quest 8.

disgaea's interesting because it can be both mindless fun and actually tactical depending on what difficulty level you set the enemy to
you can make your own kind of gimmicky teams and it's great

etrian odyssey (specifically the 3ds games) is a pretty good dungeon crawler series with fun character building and fun exploration through labyrinths
it can be quite difficult if you aren't savvy but fortunately the 3ds games have a difficulty setting that you can change whenever you're in town

Dude one of the few non Pokemon JRPGs I stumbled into as a kid was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the game boy advanced. That game was fucking sick. It probably wouldn't hold up fantastically if I looked at it nowadays but it was cool. Thing is I stumbled through it because I couldn't read

(same with Pokemon Diamond; I didn't know what was happening so I named both myself and my rival my name in all caps and at the start I didn't know what to do because I had to go to my rivals house but I kept reading my name on the mailbox of my own house and thought the game was broke. That game taught me so much vocabulary)
