I'm trying to get the "real ending" to the original Sonic for the first time ever, and maintaining 50 rings is sucking all the enjoyment out of the game. Whoever decided that it would be a good idea to take a game predicated on speed and force a cautious, slow playthrough should be banished from the industry.

And that doesn't even get to the random crapshoot that are the bonus stages.

Fuck this game.

A skilled player can go fast and not get hit.

If you have to go slow to maintain your rings, you're not good enough/familiar with the level design enough.

That's the problem. You can't go back and repeat a level like DKC or SMW, so there's no way to memorize it without playing the entire game over and over. That's complete nonsense.

Chaos Emeralds are always a chore. Sucks that they lock the true final battles behind them.

You can always die and try again. Also if memory serves there are like... 18 levels and only 6 chaos emeralds? So you only need to succeed 6 times. Lots of margin for error.

I'm not a big fan of the game but complaining that a platformer rewards you for not getting hit is just strange to me. The chaos emeralds are how you prove you're good at the game; if you just want to get through it then the whole ring system makes you almost immortal outside of pits/water/being crushed/the final boss anyway.

1. If you fail in the bonus level, you do not get a second chance.
2. You can't get the emeralds in any act 3, so I believe you only have 11 chances. And to play the later levels for 50 rings is horribly un-fun.

It's a Sonic game. They should have had the bonus rings open up if you complete a level in under a certain amount of time, since the entire draw of the experience is speed--not dodging enemies.

Alternatively, they could have gone the Sonic 3 route and reward exploration.

You could just use the level select cheat.

Again, the difficulty isn't my complaint. My complaint is that having to maintain 50 rings takes away the fun part of the game.

Maintaining rings is already a big part of the game since it's both your health and your score.

Also Sonic 1's true ending is just, like, a splash screen. It's not worth doing if the process itself isn't fun for you.

Nah. It's also not a great game to begin with, so this is just adding extra tedium.

If you can't maintain rings and go fast at the same time then you're bad at the game and the issue you have is it's too difficult for you

Doesn't really have anything to do with how good or bad the game is when other people have no issue doing that

My biggest issue is calling the bonus stages random crapshoots

Theyre meant to be learned over replays!

I agree with seph g here, one of my biggest pet peeves in video gaming is when the final boss requires a completely seperate skill from the one you spent the entire game honing. Sonic is notorious for this, and the dumb flippy minigames are a dumb wall to put in front of the final boss.

Also Sonic 1 isn't really a game designed for speed like 2/3/Mania are, so going slower than you might normally turns an already painfully slow game (by todays standards) into basically 7 Grand Dad

Sonic's "hold right" gameplay has always sucked.

Not sure this post works here when it seems like the OP's main complaint is actually that he can't hold right and get away with it.

this has always been a big misnomer

especially for Sonic 1, which plays a lot more like a traditional platformer than other games in the series do

Sonic 1 isn't a great game, but the bonus level requirements aren't a reason why. There's no real incentive to get them all in the first game anyway. There's nothing locked behind it.

I know, and it suffers immensely from it. People only seem to remember the immaculate Green Hill Zone though.

What are you playing this on? The ps4 remaster? If so you can absalutely save before the bonus stage and if you mess up, then reload.

If your playing this on an actual Genesis... Why are you playing this game now on a Genesis?
