ITT: let's discuss the games that, for better or worse, took a significantly different direction compared to others in their respective series. The example I have in mind is Majora's Mask, but that may not be drastic enough of a change to really fit the description.

Do you mean like a one-off things instead of changing the series completely?

Splinter Cell Conviction and Hitman Absolution come to mind for me.

Right. It doesn't really count if the games that came after it went in that same direction.

SMB2 I think is another example.

Good example, imo. It was marketed as the 3D evolution of the series and a mainline title at the time.

On topic I'm going with Pokmon snap and jax and dexter (since 2 and 3 were the ones that went a completely different route).

Pokemon Black and White felt like it was meant to be a reboot of the main series with how they only let you use the new Pokemon introduced in that game until after you beat the game. Plus, the story also stood out a lot from past Pokemon games because it felt more serious, almost dark in a way. Black 2 and White 2 brought it back a bit closer to the norm of the main series, but it was still pretty far out there as well. Between the gameplay changes and the fact that there was a same-generation direct sequel instead of just an "improved" third version, fifth gen as a whole just sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the Pokemon franchise.

They are but they structure these fights as separate encounters because of it. Which makes it feel pretty different in general.

The game is sorta like constantly walking into a new horde map if that makes sense?

I don't mean the challenges. I mean the way they set up the firefights.

In a normal Gears games you make your way through the levels and enemies pop up along the way. They can pop up anywhere and sometimes it can be one or two at a time.

Judgment is way more segmented. It's like each time you get into a firefight you step into an arena with a main goal and an optional challenge. The enemies spawn like you're in a Horde map sometimes too. It's not structured like a normal Gears game. It's more like a game made up of Horde maps with different objectives and challenges and you walk between them. The campaign was just different in general.

Meh, I didn't notice anything different. It could just be a psychological thing because of the challenges making the segments stand out to you more. Most campaigns are segmented like that. They're just done so that it's typically seamless. Judgement just really highlights those seams.
