The same Argentina that needed to drag Messi out of retirement because they legit weren't even going to qualify for the World Cup?
Russia are one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition. This is in part down to not playing friendlies but it's also partially because they don't win tournaments.
They've looked good against weak opposition and they could beat a Uruguay team that isn't playing well. They should get trashed by either Portugal or Spain though.
Croatia is playing well and so are Belgium if you want to root for a European underdog Russia isn't the one to look at.

Well yeah I only have Russia to the Round of 16 - I didn't expect them to beat Portugal or Spain. I don't think it was too crazy to pick Argentina to win it all - Messi has underperformed almost his entire international career so it kind of seemed like he might be 'due', plus getting so close 4 years ago. Yeah they barely qualified but plenty of teams have barely qualified then went on to have good World Cups. Plus they really should have won the Copa America 2 years ago.

So in case anyone's curious, according to the point system, you get more points for getting either 1 or 2 in the correct spot and missing the other entirely than you do for getting 1 and 2 correct but in the reverse order.

Yeah, you get 3 points if you get 1/2 reversed. You get 10 per 1 correct and 10 per 2 correct, and 38 if you get 1/2 correct. It's extremely staggered. Think 1/2 reversed should be worth more than at least 2 correct. Wigs also has 6 pts and we were trying to figure it out for the longest time when I finally went and read the "how to play" section.

It's also misleading because the "38 for getting the entire group in the correct order" as it reads only actually applies to 1/2. Myself and others are perfect despite not getting egypt/saudi in the correct order.

I think they just screwed up with egypt/saudi because I have Spain and Portugal perfect but swapped Iran and Morocco and i'm behind the group that is "perfect".

Oh ok. Well the knockout stage scoring is a little better but I still got completely buried due to not rewarding correct knockout picks anywhere near enough.

At least it's not like NCAA brackets where losing a team you had going far is such a huge killer you might as well give up. But yeah, the disparity between flip-flopping 1/2 and just getting even one of them right is pretty large.

Also the website is super slow sometimes, I've gotten my points for colombia but haven't gotten them for mexico in 2nd yet.

Also, for reference, using the scoring system, this means the max possible for the group stage is 228 points, while the max for the KO stage is 148 points, with 80 of that coming from getting the right teams in the right spots to start off. So yeah, since that section is basically a carryover from the group stage, that means the group stage is worth more than the KO stage by far. If someone theoretically flipped 1/2 in every bracket, they would end up with 24 points in the group stage instead of the 160 they would have gotten from getting 1/2 right and not 3/4. That means the max they could get from the KO stage would be 68 points extra. A total of 92 points, for getting every KO team right in the wrong order and correctly predicting the entire tournament, as opposed to 100 points from someone who got 1/2 right in 5 of the 8 groups and missed every advancing team in the tournament, not even counting the extra fixture points they'd get.

This is dumb.
