Tell me how jobs down here want college grads to have 6+ years of experience, on top of some bullshit certifications (3 jobs that Ive seen this week want me to have already been Bonded which I guess is a term for being insured while working in a bank?)

And they want to pay $12 an hour

I cant believe I let my family convince me to stay as long as i have. I moved down here a year ago, and now Im stuck with this lease until November/December.

College grads, dont try to start your professional life down in Florida. Go to a big city. It might be more expensive, but youll have a MUCH easier time getting employed in places that dont practice bullshit like Right to Work, where you can be laid off at any time for no reason.

Ugh, venting

I didn't even know you needed a forklift license. I drive forklifts, cranes, etc all the time. But it is usually on a military base...

I live in Orlando, which is... pretty much just 81 (the highway), John Young Parkway (this road you can reach EVERYTHING on), and housing complexes that range from shitty to pretty decent.

My sister LOVES it for some reason, probably because were renting a house, but I dont think its that great. And I havent seen a single place of culture OR random people walking around shirtless. Thats probably exclusive to the coastal areas like Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

When i was 15, i worked in a tool and dye shop and would drive forklifts. But later there was an ad saying you could get a forklift license and find work, around 16/hour. I took the bait, but as i said, couldn't find work cause they all needed experience.

I can definitely understand the "certification" thing when it comes to jobs down here

I recently graduated with my masters in florida and I've tried applying to jobs like I've had before in chicago with just my bachelors, and it turns out that I'm both overqualified and underqualified for those jobs at the same time because it turns out you need some 2 year associates certificate to do the piss easy lab jobs in florida (which was never EVER a thing in chicago). I just want an "in the mean time" job to make money while I find a better job ;;

Edit: I will say one thing though, that i've learned from my job search... Florida really needs nurses! if you're an RN, you'll at least be able to get a job down here :x. Too many nursing jobs posted. Must be all the old people

Yeah, Im doing some shitty little thing at this convention center place for a while, but its a temp gig for just a few weeks. Dunno whats gonna happen after.

Depending on how things go from here on out, I might just go straight to LA, but that would involve me working nonstop and having at least $5000 and idk how I can even do that at this point.

It's not a waste of a year. You learned a really good and valuable lesson and while that sucks, it gives you something under your belt that most people don't have because they play it too safe. I'm sure you're quite irate and pissed about the sitch, but I think you'll come to appreciate a few things out of being down there. I hope the move away from FL goes smoothly.

Kinda like that all over. And iirc "bonded" just means insured against you (or your employee) stealing something, which is a term I more often hear when it comes to contractors. Not really familiar with it when it comes to banks.

Florida has Jacksonville and Miami, two of the largest cities in the country. Tampa is also pretty big. Actually, it's got a bunch more cities with 100k-200k people. At any rate, if you think Florida is bad, I invite you to come to Connecticut. Our economy is shot, our taxes are obscene, and the only reason people still live here is either Stockholm Syndrome or masochism (well, plus people who work around NYC but don't want to live in NY or NJ). Our largest cities don't even touch 150k.

lolwut? RtW laws just mean you don't need to join a union to work for an employer that has a union. It has nothing to do with at-will employment and every state has at-will employment.

Slummy areas in a lot of states during summer have it. Plus there are a lot of joggers who run shirtless. Rather annoyingly, we only seem to have *male* joggers in my area.

True. If anyplace I would highly recommend moving is out in the west. Specifically Las Vegas believe it or not. The job market out there is always booming for any entry level person. My boyfriend lives out there and he first started off just doing normal typical office data entry work for a bank. Then before he knew it, he was rising through the ranks and is now currently a banker making a good 17 an hour. I guess it all depends on if your good at your job as well and if you put in the work. Needless to say, he didn't even need a degree either for any of this. And within due time, he will be making 20 an hour which Id say, should at least be the bare minimum to live a decent life.
I have yet to make the move out there but if there is also any place you should not move to TC, which this is on a side note, DO NOT move to Cleveland! Heheh.... not if you want to work in factory jobs all day long and well.. thats where Im at sadly. And the most im making is just a mere 10.68 per hour. Yeah, I know that sucks but at least they give decent raises every year which isn't bad. A starters, mid level and maximum. But its pretty damn easy structural work really for that wage honestly. And ive worked in a few factories so far I didnt even like. Some are worse though here at the $8 range which is, ehh...

But anyways. Sorry for ranting, but your situation kind of reminded me of mine in a way. Someday soon though, I seriously cant wait to move out there to Vegas. Just a much better opportunity overall from what Ive seen.

Florida sucks and I keep having to go there for some reason. First two times were vacations for Universal studios which were fun, but the rest (outside theme parks) sucked ass.

But the next one is for my sisters wedding next month and I hate it and wish it wasn't in Florida. Frickin hate that state.

TC, You're trying to find employment in a state marked with tourism and hospitals (and some places to go the park).
So unless you plan on picking up bedpans or working in food & beverage/customer service hell or at a gas station, your options are slim.
