Home consoles? Obviously Sixth gen, no contest. PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox.

Portables? Seventh because of the incomparable PSP. Even the weakling DS had some good games.

This. Tech had developed enough to the point where ideas that sort of flopped in fifth gen finally got a real try at commerical success and usually did so. It certainly was a weak generation for platformers, especially 2D, but it made up for it with the insane amount of creativity going around. I can think of a more diverse generation of gaming than that one.

4th followed by 6th.

4th was when 2D gaming was at it's peak and games were starting to become more then just "grind over and over again until you win".

6th was when 3D finally started to get it's stride, and especially in the PC realm was putting out some of the best games that to this day companies try to emulate (and fail miserably at).

6th for me. Loved me some Dreamcast! And I could play my PS games on PS2, and also PS2 games. And I love a lot of both. Gamecube also had some great games. Xbox wasn't bad, either. I will say that I did love me some N64, though. I still had it and played it frequently. But for the whole generation, I'd have to go 6th...

Why is Wii U and Switch in the same generation?

I guess because they both came out pretty close. Like both came out while PS4 and Xbox One came out. While Sony and Microsoft just made the same system, but upgraded, Nintendo was like, here's an actual new system...

the wii u was kind of a continuation of ps3 and xbox one, it had a really fast disk drive, 60fps games and 1gb of ram solely for gaming

the wii u came out two years before xbox one and ps4, there were like two games on either system at first in early 2014

i'm upset the wii u didn't last longer but the load times in BotW would have sucked

the PS2 era was a perfect moment in time for games in so many ways with where budget, developer experience, tech level, userbase, market environment, so on aligned perfectly for all sorts of games, in particular, it was middle budget heaven

the PS1 era was the precursor to this but the tech and experience wasn't quite there, and then the next generation opened with devs taking that same bright-eyed outlook to the higher power 360, the creative draw of the Wii and DS, and the just-about-on-par-with-PS2 PSP, but it fizzled out by the generation's end due to the changes in the market environment and dev costs just getting too high

For home consoles, 4 then 7 maybe. 6 also comes close as second place. It's kinda hard. Gens 6 and 7 probably had more games within the generation that I liked, but Gen 4 had many of the games I've liked the most.

lolwut? The PSP sucked and the DS ran pretty smoothly in addition to having a great library.

I may be a little bit biased from nostalgia but Gen 4. But Gen 6 is also very close or on par. (I missed most of Gen 5)

The Switch is still questionable. At the moment, I consider it to be "Generation 8.5" along with PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X (even though new gaming generations usually take place every 4-7 years). Other than upgraded 8th gen consoles, there haven't been any new home consoles to go alongside the Nintendo Switch yet.
