in theory this may be true but this doesn't work at all in the movie example you were going for - you don't understand the movie industry at all if you think a $2 billion movie is guaranteed to make $1 billion. you have no idea how badly movies can flop.

I get that, I'm just saying it's a clear failure at that point, especially if you're using profit as a measure (as opposed to like artistic value or whatever). Anyways the analogy was that Hillary got a lot of votes but it's a very weak showing considering the effort and resources.

considering how few movies in history have made one billion, yes, this would be quite an impressive feat.

spoilers: if you put thirty billion dollars into the movie and it made one billion it would still be impressive. making a lot of money with a movie is about a lot more than just pumping money into it.

Just because a few far sided people use overly frightening imagery to make their points doesn't mean we need to ignore the obvious, does it? We have clear evidence humans can directly attribute to weather in localized areas, do we not? Certain amounts of regulations and restrictions are necessary to curb that from becoming a norm in more places, and reduce it from being the norm in places it is already.

This is a great post, mc has far more patience than I do.

Ulti... what the hell is wrong with you? The guy I considered a good friend back in 2002 would never insult someone's family over something like this. Even if you weren't wrong about this (and others have done a pretty good job of illustrating this, so I won't pile on), it still looks terrible on you. Give yourself a look in the mirror, man. I don't even know if this is the real you or your stupid Board 8 persona any more, but it's not a good look.

By the way, my wife worked in oceanography as well, and I can pretty much assure you from attending events with her co-workers etc. that yeah nobody who actually studies this (without a clear agenda in mind) doubts that there is a clear connection between CO2 and temperature, or that we're putting a lot more CO2 into the atmosphere, or that the global temperature is rising (though how much is indeed difficult to measure). You can respond to this by saying "your wife and all her co-workers are idiots" if you want, but I'd suggest you think carefully about if that's something you actually want to do.

I think you're forgetting how old I am. In the 80s, we were told an ice age was coming. Then it was hilariously wrong.

I'm not linking to articles in the woodwork of the internet to help push any agenda. Anyone that ever wanted to make a point about anything could easily find a reference to back them up. That's an unfortunate downside of having so much "information" at your fingertips. An untold amount of truth and fiction exists, but I choose to just believe the evidence I can witness myself. When a morning weather report has to include a smog outlook, then I have all the evidence I need to see humans are negatively impacting our air. It's not a natural phenomenon and it is something that can be directly controlled by us. It's visible to the eyes, and unlike a global outlook on Earth we can see it because it happens in a densely populated area. If we as a culture are stupid enough to believe that this isn't something to address, then we'll deserve what happens to us.

"Left" is a relative direction also. I don't bind myself to it because it would mean losing my own opinions in favor of a group mentality. And I'm not going out of my way to make someone I disagree with look bad. I let them do it for me.

Whether you want to believe the large majority of the scientific community on global warming or not, the goal is really at the end of the day "stop polluting so much, let's figure out a way to do things better". I'm not sure why you are arguing the semantics of the situation instead of the actual situation itself. If you really believe polluting is something bad, then I don't really understand why you care if "the left" believes we are at risk of destroying the planet's climate permanently. Isn't it more important to, you know, work together and cut down on pollution?

Sounds like an argument for the sake of having an argument to me.

There are always going to be natural warming and cooling cycles, and the planet will be just fine after we're gone. To claim human beings can control climate to the point of killing ourselves off or harming the planet at large is the height of arrogance.

It's truly sad how few people understand this. Arrogance is the natural state of "liberals," unfortunately.

as for her being "horribly flawed," we'd have to visit alternate realities to see how other democrat candidates would have done against trump to know that. i certainly don't think anyone else would have easily beaten trump. would certain others have done better? probably.

Trump just completely lucked out. He managed to be simply the right person in the right place at the right time. It is not through much in the way of skill of his own. ANY other year he would have lost the election. If the election had taken place a year later it would have coincided with the beginning of #metoo.

I'm tempted not to believe the whole "no other Democrat could have lost to Trump" but I understand where it's coming from. It just sounds so nonsensical on the surface.

Then again I'm reading Hillary Clinton's "What Happened?" book and actually liking it...although I definitely see the problems people have with her all things considered. Also my Dad was a huge Hillary fan, so I grew up in a very Democrat environment and my perspective is possibly biased (doesn't help that I'm not white. Or that my Dad hates America).

I mean, as far as Hillary is concerned, so far she has not mentioned Gamergate, Anita Sarkeesian, or Ghostbusters 2016 in her book (hoping to dear god she doesn't, otherwise all bets are off). Maybe that doesn't seem like much, but I know Trump weighed in on the Ghostbusters 2016 controversy pretty much immediately. That's basically a microcosm of the both of them: Hillary is more focused on the business at hand while Trump goes around tweeting about junk, but the latter is more relatable so unfortunately that's what gets votes.

Also those supporting America pulling out of the Paris agreement...so is EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD stupid? This is why Americans are made fun of abroad.

By most metric standards of politicians Hillary is very smart. However she failed to keep up with the progressing social environment. She's kind of stuck in the '90s.

This is one thing I think people might have been hoping for with Trump: that his background in business would help him keep up with fast-changing societal aspects. And I guess it makes sense why people continue to support him in spite of his many tumbles: a lot of those tumbles deal with foreign policy and obviously many Americans care diddly squat for that.

Okay so Ulti dismisses others just because they're leftists. Good to know.

I'm personally giving Trump the benefit of the doubt and he just fails completely every single time by the metrics I know of what a good POTUS is. But then again I haven't even set foot in America in almost a decade so who knows? I'd also just like to mention that I find it hard to be mad at Trump himself, moreso at the social climate that led to his election victory. Like I said, IMO he just lucked out completely. I don't think any Democrat could have beaten Trump in the last election as a result though. It's not like Bernie Sanders doesn't have his fair share of detractors (including ardent Hillary supporters).
