i ask because bendy and the ink machine intrigued me but having to buy separate chapters of the game and then waiting until the next level is completed and uploaded to digital storefronts for purchase is pretty lame

I don't like it. I like to play a game from start to finish and not having to wait 3 months for the next part.

I would rather play the whole game. But if you wait for the whole game to release first, it's not as bad. Like I remember I got Tales of the Borderlands. And then forgot I got it. When I remembered later on(years and years later), I was able to play from start to finish... But it would suck waiting for each separate chapter...

That is true. I was watching certain YouTubers play it. And before chapter 4, it had been a while since they last chapter. Months, IIRC...

That's not too bad. At least you can buy what you want instead of having to buy all of it. And maybe there are(or will be) a sale for all of them that will be cheaper. At $6, that's $24 for 4 chapters. Which is less than half the price of a lot of the AAA games...

Even after chapter 5, $30 isn't too bad...

Its about money. Its not under our control. You want the newer triple A RPGs made all together then you gotta play $150 per game.

yeah i like horror games but this one seems kinda weird....the first chapter didn't really hook me in from what i played of it

i kinda stopped and got a little bored once they made me go on a scavenger hunt and nothing really different was happening

Maybe. Though, if they sold it all together for the same price, you'd still spend the same. But like I was saying earlier, you could always wait for all the chapters, then buy...

I don't buy them, period.

The only reason I own any Telltale games at all (many of which ARE very good) is because they usually release a full-season disc version of their games after every chapter has been released separately, so I can buy them all at once and (in theory) have a physical copy of them rather than having nothing but a season pass and digital downloads.

If a game doesn't have that full release at some point, I will never buy it. Ever.

Hell, that's what guaranteed I was never, ever going to play Dreamfall Chapters in spite of writing an extremely glowing review of its predecessor for this very website. The moment they announced it was episodic I was pretty much like "Ha, ha - fuck that noise." And it's one of many, many reasons the FFVII re-release has always looked like a custerfuck of hot garbage to me.

Though honestly, even if an episodic game GETS a full release at some point, I still dislike the format in general, because I feel like it makes for worse in-game storytelling. It's disruptive to narrative flow in a lot of ways, and can lead to disjointed plot. For games that do it well, this is mostly a minimal issue, but there are certainly games out there that almost definitely suffered from being a single game chopped into smaller chunks.

I don't have a problem with them. We watch TV shows in episodes, same with book series, comics, movie series, etc. I don't see why video games are forbidden from working that way.

Outside of Micro-transactions it's my most hated gaming trend, it's annoying having to wait for a game to be "Finished" and several times some of the episodes miss the deadline and need much more time. It feels lazy.

Video games don't translate even decently to a TV format and I don't know why developers feel the need to push that angle instead of relying on gaming's strengths.

Not a fan at all. I didnt mind it too much in telltale games because I couldnt care too much about the game itself and mostly liked that it was some very easy trophies, the idea that they want to do the ff7 remake as an episodic game doesnt sound very appealing.

If it's never released, then good thing you didn't buy by episodes... So, that's one reason to wait. If you don't remember, maybe it wasn't that good of game. People usually talk bout good games...

I hate the concept of episodic games but, as PO said, they sometimes release a compilation and at that point it's not much different from other games. Granted, Telltale games in general don't look very look appealing to me so I've avoided them and stuff like them so far.

Because video game does not have the same restrictions. TV show has to fit into the allocated time slots. Book writer has to pay bills while writing their work and not many people are gonna buy a 20 lb book. Comic (mainly ones with shared universe) has to come out on a tight schedule to remain relevant. Movies have to end before people get tired.

I don't like it. its also why a tv show has to be really fucking good to me for me to get into it. otherwise i'll happily wait for the show to finish its season then just binge many episodes at a time till I finish at my own leisure.

with games i'll probably do the same, wait till they all release, wait and see if I can get a deal on the whole bundle.

with final fantasy four the after years I just waited till they packaged the whole thing as one game. still irked me though thinking how much better the game could have been if they didn't do it in the manner they did

That's all true, but I don't see how that relates to video game episodes. That just means that games don't have to be episodic.

Games can indeed be any length, so there's no reason it can't be split into smaller episodes if that's the approach the creators want to take.
