http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2018/05/01/mom-parkland-shooting-victim-shocked-by-36000-charter-flight-bill-asks-for-compassion.html

Linda Schulman's ordeal began after she learned her son, Marjory Stoneman Douglass geography teacher Scott Beigel, had been killed in the Feb. 14 shooting. She immediately tried to get a flight down to Parkland, but everything was booked.

"We took to our computers searching every airline that could get us to Florida from Islip, LaGuardia, JFK or Newark. Long story short, due to school having winter break and a major PGA golf tournament taking place in Florida, there were no available flights to be had," she wrote on Facebook.

Every airline she contacted told her there were no seats available for the urgent flight, so she booked a charter flight with Talon Air Inc.

"Even though I had never chartered a plane before, I knew it was going to be super expensive. It didnt matter what the cost ~ I had to get to my son!" she wrote.

Soon after the flight, the grieving mother was hit with a crippling $36,458 bill for the flight down and then flying the empty plane back - a common practice for airline companies.

"I have no problem accepting that I have to pay for one way, even the fuel charge for the return flight," Beigels mother wrote on Facebook. "Where is the compassion from Talon Air Inc.?"

Six weeks after Beigel was killed, Talon Air has responded and agreed to reimburse Schulman the cost of the one-way flight, $18,229.56, and donate the remaining $18,229 to the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships for children to attend summer camp.

No wonder she didn't care about the cost--she had no intention of paying.

Definitely not this. "I knew it was going to be super expensive. It didnt matter what the cost ~ I had to get to my son!"-she made her choices, she shouldn't get a refund just because she regretted her choice and played the "big mean rich company ripping odd the poor simple mother" card. Unpopular opinion time-he'd been killed so while sad and unfortunate, getting there a day or so later wasn't going to change anything.

If that's the attitude it would take, you'd be absolutely right. Except I'm guessing you're not about to be interviewed for Forbes either anytime soon so what this really comes down to is the common public opinion that if someone whines and moans enough they can be unfairly rewarded in order to keep them quiet, even if it just shows that they're irresponsible and dishonest.

It is sad, I feel bad for this lady. However she is not a victim of the airline. In some of her statement she seemingly attacked them. I don't like that. She could have waited , she could have went to another airport and renter a car, she could have done many things but she did what she did and acted then played the victim. I feel bad even coming down hard on this lady, but she was in the wrong here.

It's a private jet that has to be fly back empty, of course you'll be charge for both departures, if she had waited like a sane person she could've flown free without having to complain to the media about the big bad airline charging her to get flown on short notice in a fancy private jet.

Hell, I'm sure if she set up a gofund me she could've had it paid off in a matter of hours and she wouldn't come off quite as scummy as she does.

This. The woman could have easily gotten a ticket from NY to Jacksonville or some other city and driven 6 hours. Her grief is not an entitlement to flying a private jet and not paying the costs. This is absolutely a classless move on her part.

perhaps losing your child makes you do irrational things. and maybe the only way she saw to deal with the consequences of her decisions after the fact was to rationalise them by way of thinking her grief entitled her to this sort of thing

That really makes the most sense than someone just trying to screw this company over...you find out your child was killed in a shooting and i bet you'd try every possible way to get to them as soon as possible. Its not like she went for the private jet first. it was all she could find immediately. Then when it was all said and done the reality of the situation hit her and she's dealing with both this and the grief. Unfortunately, unless the company wants to offer compassion, she is not entitled to compassion based on her situation and hopefully as things settle she'll eventually see that..but i can definitely understand the immediate irrationality of her thoughts.

you know, youre right. the few months it has been is enough to get over losing her child and realise her decisions are irrational. she certainly has had plenty of time to reflect on her own decision-making since theres nothing else affecting her emotional stability and critical thinking at the moment
