Not that this would solve poor money management skills. And of course this will kick a hornets nest.
But Millennials, maybe then don't vote for democrats. They want to tax you to fund every feel good bs cause under the sun only to then pilfer from that pot for some pet project along the way. Then tax you again and more for the same cause later on. Rinse, repeat. Punishment tax for not driving the vehicle they want you to. Tax gas. Pass this, pass that because feelings. Thank god at least congress got rid of that damn individual mandate because there they were taxing us for not buying a shitty private owned service that still wouldn't cover you 100% in an emergency and you would go broke anyway.
That leaves you with less money to save or spend. But hey, you do get to post on twitter that you stand with *insert flavor of the month cause*.

The other side certainly aren't saints and have their own help the rich friends motives. But they do help the regular guy more financially than anyone is going to admit they do. Under them I get a tax return. Under Dems I never do. And I'm at poverty level according to CA.

The Republican tax plan will increase taxes on the bottom 99% of income earners by 2027. Stop falling for Republican bullshit.

And instead of applying to only non-retail jobs, they would rather keep on making posts and sharing meme's about how their job sucks.

Maybe the school system should teach the kids shit they really need to know instead of useless info like who was on whos side in World War 2? Kids need to learn life skills, not useless bull shit like that for 12 years

That stuff is important.

The difference between metonymy and synecdoche, not so much. And yes, I do know which one I just used. I wish I didn't have to, but I do.

A coworker recently asked me what I splurged money on. I said the last big purchase I made was for a Switch, but I'm typically scrounging whatever money I can together because it's generally going to shit like replacing tires or paying taxes due to a shady ex-employer

Despite being terrible at being proactive about my financial future sometimes, I'm pretty fucking frugal, which is why I've lasted this long on my paycheck I guess.

Edit: Also, I hate the word "adulting" and the cutesy commiseration over life being difficult. Celebrating mediocrity and laziness is pathetic and it doesn't make you cute when you joke about overindulging on netflix in your pajamas. You're wasting your life.

The last thing we need is even more uninformed voters. Americans are already stereotypically dumb about geography and world affairs and whatnot. It's important for people to understand how the US got to where it is today in terms of its role in the world.

Maybe not the best example, but I'll stand my ground. Schools teach way too much bull shit that people don't need in adult life and skip on skills they do need.

Imagine not knowing what school/education is for.

Middle and high school are pretty much glorified babysitters. I learned nothing of value from them despite graduating with decent grades

Kid knows how to read and write but probably doesn't know how he learned to read and write.

No I think what is absurd is whining about your "chosen" responsibilities and prioritization of your luxuries\wants.

Sorry dude but she's whining. We all wish we had more money for the things we "want". She's not an exception to the rule she's just being a whiner.

How? If person A moves down and person B moves up, the net result is still balanced. There's a bigger winner and loser than before, but it doesn't seem very disproportionate in terms of numbers. The whole thing seems more merit based than anything else.

I definitely fall into the loser bracket, so it's not like I'm personally successful and knocking anyone else. My dad makes 5-figures per month. I'll never come close to matching that. I have friends who own multiple properties though, or at least a property, and many hold good positions at work or own a business.

Probably about half the people I mix with are business owners.

when i was getting married i had to go to a pre-cana thing to get approved to be married in the church, & part of it was attending a class on marriage topics, which included finances.

it was taught by these two 60 or 70 year olds, and i remember it being hilarious because of how out of touch they were with the economic climate of today. one of the most striking moments was when they asked what everyone's last big purchase was, and most ppl said the engagement ring, with one older couple saying a house.

the old people were completely shocked because they were expecting to hear answers like "giant TV" or "new car" or something like that.

i think this is honestly just how our generation is, in a lot of ways i think young people dont waste their money like older people, they maybe just dont make the most sound decisions. but it's kind of a tall order to expect someone in the peak of their life to make exclusively dull, safe decisions with their money when they are already forgoing a lot of luxuries presumably

FYI, the tax bill did several things that work against your interests:

1) It made the increase to your standard deduction temporary, it expires in ten years and you will go back to your old standard deduction.

2) It made the gradation method used to increase the income thresholds in the IRS tax table that determines your effective tax rate on your taxable income use a reduced inflation model, so more of your money will be taxed at higher rates over time.

The effect of 2) is gradual and zero at tax bill start, so upfront it will seem like a cut. But current you is borrowing from future you, who will pay a higher percent of your taxable income as federal income tax. And the standard deduction that would offset it will expire, leading to an overall tax hike that is gradually phased in.

These made the net cost of the cut to your income tax nearly zero to the government, and freed the bill's 1.5T budget to focus on permanent corporate tax rate cuts that are not offset by anything.

I think it's important that taxpayers understand what to expect on future tax returns so they are not caught owing a penalty.

This, Republicans, anecdotally the poor republicans I hear see really short sighted. That extra $24 a month is really awesome for them I guess. If you are that poor you should vote for dems because they are trying to implement incentives for you to escape that poverty, particularly by attempting to tax the rich at higher rates. For some reason poor republicans don't like taxing the rich though "It's their money, they earned it"....Both sides suck, the best thing you can try and do is get an education or skills from a trade school so you aren't stuck working retail the rest of your life.

You mean how everyone is blaming millenials for the problems being perpetuated like student loan debt? Its almost as if everyone is telling us to go to school and to take a loan because we should be able to pay it off. Or how instead of going out we stay in because its cheaper but say we lack social skills. Then proceed to say millennials are the reason golf is at a decline and were not buying diamonds. Get the f*** out. Next youre going to say dont have children; theyre expensive. And following that MILLENIALS ARE THE REASON THE POPULATION IS DECLINING!

I've bought some nice things like my powerbeats3, but they make me happy and are a fraction of what I have to pay for rent every month anyway.

I'm a 28-year-old millennial broke and in debt but alive and making more money now than I was 5 months ago. Finally above median US income.

I've never missed a payment on debt or any kind of utility (other than one tiny exception when I was 18 and didn't know a payment was expected on something), and I have plans to pay it all back, so I'm fine. I don't need anyone criticizing me for my broke-ness.

I don't really get this topic because the picture doesn't relate to what TC is trying to say. Yeah, there are people who spend money they don't have, but there are two people in the picture:

1) A person saying "I wish I could spend all this extra money on something luxurious, but I'm gonna use it to take care of my dog. Vet bills are expensive. Bummer."
2) A person saying "I had some money saved up and I spent it" while making no comment about having money issues.

how does this relate

Why DO so many millennials work in low pay jobs with no scope for progression?

Momentum

People tend to keep doing what they're already doing.

They're alive right now working that job and so they take the comfort of probably continuing to survive on that job for awhile over the uncertainty of spending their time on something other than that job and potentially failing and ending up with no money at all.

I'd be able to afford a mansion and a yacht if it weren't for all this avocado toast I keep eating!

Ugh I had high hopes for this one getting to 500 without needing me to post in it, considering the early response rates.
