I mean, people name there fame animals sometimes...

And sometimes, they make a kid name an animal, raise it, then murder and eat it. I could never do that, though.

Nothing beats a stroll in cattle country. Hi, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such educational films as Two Minus Three Equals Negative Fun.! And Firecrackers: The Silent Killer.

Mr. McClure?

Oh, hello, Bobby.

Jimmy. I'm curious as to how meat gets from the ranch to my stomach.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down, Jimmy. You just asked a mouthful. It all starts here in the high-density feedlot. Then when the cattle are just right- Mmm! it's time for them to "graduate" from Bovine University. Come on, Jimmy. Let's take a peek at the killing floor.

Jimmy gasps

Don't let the name throw you, Jimmy. It's not really a floor. It's more of a steel grating... that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported. Getting hungry, Jimmy?

Uh, Mr. McClure, I have a crazy friend... who says it's wrong to eat meat. Is he crazy?

No, just ignorant. You see, your crazy friend never heard of the food chain. Just ask this scientician.

Uh-

He'll tell you that in nature one creature invariably eats another to survive. Don't kid yourself, Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about.

Wow, Mr. McClure! I was a Grade A moron to ever question eating meat.

Yes, you were, Jimmy. Yes, you were.

At least one side, if not both, will make terrible arguments like "if you wouldn't eat your pet dog, why would you eat meat" and "eating beef and honey are equally horrible" and "but what about the vegetables you're murdering" and "but animals eat other animals."

Animals eat other animals is entirely true though, how is it a bad argument? We're animals.

Animals eat animals, plants indirectly and sometimes directly eat animals and other plants. Even herbivores will kill and eat smaller animals sometimes. Massive amounts of animals are killed accidentally while harvesting plants. Plants have feelings and science is finding more and more reasons that they may be intelligent and self aware. Even an ultra vegan who grows all of their own food is probably "murdering".

Life is death and there is no escape.

It takes a lot of plant matter to make meat. Beef for example takes over 6 pounds of grain per pound of meat.

It's inefficient vs just getting the macros from the plants yourself. All protein in animals came from the plants they ate, or in the case of predators, from the plants that sustained their prey. These animals burn off the plant matter just by existing. Laws of thermodynamics: you're losing that food to animal body heat. Gone.

Humans are starving while billions of factory farmed animals eat grains in abundance. So many grains that it's burning forests to make room for animal feed. It's driving deforestation in the Amazon and other critical regions. And it's creating billions of mouths to feed while humans are still without food

Inefficient and killing the planet

I can understand that, but is it possible that it would be worse if we stop killing animals. Animals would still need to eat, so they would. And humans would also need to eat. Now we need more plants and space because both humans and animals need to eat plants. Not only that, more humans than normal are eating plants, meaning we need more than we use to have. And we also have more animals since we've stopped killing them. Maybe. I mean, we could keep making it so not as many animals can breed, but that comes with it's own problems...

I mean, I don.'think really know. I don't know the logistics of it. It just seems like that could possibly happen...

I went Vegan for a couple days and felt really malnourished at the end of it. I was craving meat at the end of it because I wasn't getting my calories. What do you snack on when you don't have enough time? A couple bananas aren't going to cut it in my 8 hour work days in between my 2 15-minute breaks.

I have a hard time getting enough calories with meat anyway.

See, I make a living slicing meat, and I'm a fan of irony.

It's not an overnight thing. You slow down and phase out meat production. Eventually those animals that need to eat are at manageable numbers. You're not breeding them over and over for slaughter. Not in the tens of billions annually. It's not like farms are shuttered and animals left to die. Which is stuff that does happen when zoonautic disease breaks out. Tens or hundreds of thousands of animals killed to become nothing.

What's at all bad about drastically reducing that

Wait what

Suppose instead of breeding all of the animals for meat that you normally would, you breed half. And then half of that. Keep reducing. Eventually the numbers are low. The animals are still dead. So instead of billions of animals dead over and over they're just not replenished artificially. That number takes care of itself in time.

That leaves a ton of land free for farms both from the reduction in animal agriculture footprint and the reduction in grains and water needed for animal feed (half of California's water goes to animal agriculture). It frees up so much space to farm or: novel idea, leave that ground to renew and return to a natural ecosystem. We don't need to exploit every bit of land

That's a couple of days... If you skip the near got a few days you'd do the same thing. You need to figure out how to eat and it's easy to do it wrong. You can also eat a really poor diet with animal products in it.

I've eaten vegan for nearly a year now and the first week was a little rough. If you can actually make it and figure things out it's really easy

Snack ideas: prunes, nuts, fruits, vegan yogurt, granola, toast, smoothies, air popped popcorn, vegetables and hummus or peanut butter, peanut butter sandwiches, dry cereal, vegan jerky... Add stuff like hemp hearts of you really want more protein

I usually take a protein shake to work that's blended greens, banana, yogurt, whatever berries I have, chia, and a bit of protein powder. It's good as heck and filling. There's a couple of bars I like for snacks. But my work snacks are usually 2 pieces of fruit

Because it's a distribution problem and not a meat problem. Much of that meat just winds up rotting because people in America and other first world countries don't buy it in time at the supermarket so they're forced to throw it away. If all the meat was eventually distributed worldwide then there wouldn't be an issue.
