Really, I have no clue what a character list would even look like for me today. It would be as much about their stories and personalities as it would be about how much fun they are to play, which is at odds with how character lists were done with me in the past.

Its good to remember that if you wanted to talk about video games outside of a contest setting, making a list topic was the way to get everyone invested and involved. In retrospect, those lists were more reflective of what I had played in between rather than a wholesale changing of the guard. Thats why it wasnt just the top 2-3, but everything changed! It was a good way to discuss those games without making a random topic whenever I felt the urge.

Theyre fun relics to look back at, though. That came from a wild, crazy time when RPGs were the real hotnessor at least my exploration of them was. It was like discovering a whole different type of game that was at odds with what I grew up knowing.

Im less confident in the order of anything here, and there are probably games Ive forgotten about that would make the list, but here we are.

No way! Its more frightening to me to think you dont experience even more maturing and understanding over the next 15 years! What was cool, new and exciting to me at 16 is not necessarily what I like as 30 approaches, haha. Your world view expands, your understanding of what you like and dislike grows with your age, and you gain a better sense of perspective.

I mean, at the end of the day, were talking about Tales of Symphonia, right? This is not some hallmark video game experience! That whole series has no appeal to me anymore, but Im okay with that because it isnt aimed to appeal to what I like about video games. I dont hate it, no actual ill will. Its just a silly RPG that I liked a whole lot a when I was a teenager on the Internet, haha.

I feel confident saying Ill never play Shadow Hearts again, haha. Part of criteria for this list is how much I would want to replay the game, or if I have an intangible connection to it, or if its held up as strongly over the years. I like Shadow Hearts, but I just know theres no way SH1s battle system could hold me today, and SH2 scares me after FF10!

you might be surprised! Shadow Hearts takes a few minutes but you can dig in and enjoy that thing. maybe not the boss battles though.

World views shift a bit, but turning so drastically makes me take all your lists as practically insincere to be honest. Like I like em for a spectacle but I can't really be too upset about the content cause it's all going to flip on its head in a week anyway

While I don't disagree with this notion, I do have to point out that your Top 40 has like five games originally released after the PS2 era, with about half of the total list belonging to the SNES era. You may not like ToS much anymore but the stuff that was cool and exciting to you when you were 16, for the most part, still is.

My top 10 list would be completely different when I was 16, but that's largely because a lot of my current top 10 would not have been released yet. There are a few games I've become more fond of over time, and some I've become less, but I think the only game I've really straight up turned on over the years has been Goldeneye-- and that was more like a 7/10 becoming a 3 or 4/10. And honestly there are tech reasons for that. It's hard to go back to that terrible frame rate for a shooter when you've experienced newer stuff

Shadow Hearts does have a unique setting and time period that really draws you in. Im not going to lieif there were some sort of re-release that made it available on a modern console, I would get the itch. I still like the content of those games, only from a distance more than up close, at this point. Although I dont have the same emotional connection to those that you do, so I understand how theyll never disappear for you!

Oh, man, I love turn-based RPGs! Its the action ones I cant stand, haha. I thought FFXVs battle system, for instance, was the worst part of it. I could never get a sense of how to make the long or short of it, so I felt like I was just wailing on things until they were defeated. Thats on me, to be sure, but turn-based battle systems are comfy, theyre fun. I like the sense of growth that comes from leveling up, gaining new skills and seeing my physical damage go up.

Its not your typical turn-based RPG, but Im playing the Superstar Saga remake on the 3DS right now, and its such a fun time. I think those games go under the radar because they dont do anything eye catching, but theyre secretly these perfect turn-based RPGs. Well, as long as they arent trying to tutorial you into the ground.

My Top 20 list by release date would be like

Hmm. To some extent, youre rightgames I played as a kid are still my favorites. The same series of games are still ones I pay the most attention to today. I guess what I mean to say is there are certain things that stop appealing to you, or you reflect back on and laugh, or that maybe just dont hold up to your memories. It isnt black-and-white, one way or the other, you know?

For me, I dont get hung up on TOS as being at odds with any feeling. Honestly, I havent played it since the before the Wii came out. I have a vague recollection of how it was, I have played a more modern take on Tales and didnt like it, and I know those types of RPGs dont appeal to me much today. I mean, its nothing against Tales, I also dont find Final Fantasy very appealing anymore either. What I want out of it is no longer what sells the most, or what is appealing to the 16 year olds of today, and doesnt resonate with my own sensibilities.

In my mind, this is natural. If someone say, I loved Final Fantasy growing up, and I never stopped loving it! I dont pass any judgment on their mindset. I think thats great, because Im that way with Mario or Zelda. It just happens to people, right? We all kind of go through it. I think people just get real hung up with me and Tales, haha, but I truly have no ill will there. I make light of it, but I have no energy to run around hating it and thinking its a curse on the world. I would probably play it sooner than most of the most popular games these days.

Well, we have all been caricatures running around here at one point! I said it earlier, and I know maybe some people think its a matter of saving face (I dont know what I would be saving at this point, haha), but those lists really were a channel to talk to the board about games. Yeah! Its been fun!

I had no motivations this time. I was inspired by transience posting his list, and wanting to put together one for the first time in forever. Nowadays, there are dedicated topics and places to chatter about what youre playing, so lists sort of feel unnecessary, but there is a magic to everyone coming in and reminiscing about old and new video games alike.

Thats why I tried to respond to everyone who posted. It was less about the list, for me, and more about the engagement.
