This. While a creator might exist, a god of most religions are just a character made to rationalize the surrounding around them because human nature is just like that.

Because people are mind-numbingly ignorant today, let alone hundreds or thousands of years ago when they'd burn "witches" and medicine involved blood-lettings, among other foolishness. Aside from religion contradicting itself and being generally ridiculous on many levels, the people who are the most devoutly behind it tend to be... less than intelligent.

Whether I believe or not is irrelevant. All I know is that there were times when I begged for help, not even for myself, just for the people I care about. Some I didn't even know personally. It never came. I never expected a magic ray of light to shine down and fix everything but you again whether it exists or not doesn't matter because at a certain point I realized even if it does exist I know is it doesn't give a s*** about me or the people I care about. Too many terrible things happening to too many good people who don't deserve it while the scum continue to be scum with no consequences.

So idk if god exists or not, but what I do know is that IF it does, it doesn't give a single f*** about me, the people I care about or a lot of the good people in this world who get put through a living hell for no good reason while the legitimately horrid people continue to slog around spread their negativity with no consequences.

I honestly believe that the biggest difference between the religious and the areligious is their comfort level with "I don't know".

That's a big factor.
I'm an agnostic atheist, which basically translates to "I don't know for certain there is no god, but the current arguments aren't convincing." The fact that I don't know every last thing about the universe doesn't make god a good answer - by that logic I could just as easily state that everything spawned from a bowl of lukewarm porridge, for how useful it is as an explanation. We might never find the answers to those big questions, but we still have good reason to continue pushing toward them as we develop our understanding of the universe.

For sure, and also a big difference with accepting our place in the universe as a whole. Some people really need to feel like there is meaning to their life and that there's a plan for them, whereas I'm perfectly fine accepting that life exists in chaos and the only meaning it has is what we give it ourselves.

That is likely a small factor. Not many people you see in the world give two craps about how their cell phone works, or how bridges are built, or how medicine is discovered. So why is that such a large fraction of the world is religious (i.e those that don't feel comfortable with the phrase "I don't know")? The answer is that most people are afraid of being punished in a hypothetical afterlife. You can be as intellectually interested in the faith, but at the end of the day that's what it comes down to. The common faiths are even structured with rules, commandments, sins whatever. Something must happen if you break these rules, otherwise they wouldn't be written by a universal authority figure.
