What do you mean by this wakanda/black panther thing tc...

he responded to this when he responded to me.

And the actual film isn't that good.

Its easily a top 10 comic book movie.

The fact that its the first all black superhero movie is huge.

While we had blade and hancock before neither had the success of Black Panther and also Blade wasnt a family film.

Its quite easy to see why a film like this would be well received and blown up.

Most really good superhero movies are, actually most movies with an intended fanbase are blown up

I just don't see why someone would have a problem with it

and it makes it "off-putting" to see a movie that isn't doing that

I was saying in white movies with white casts it is off putting when audiences react in a similar fashion. Read better, bud.

and somehow people being excited and cool with a movie because it's a momentous cultural occasion is "too much" for you? Even compared to Harry Potter and LOTR fandom?

The difference is we all agreed that those people took it too far, or at elast that was my understanding? Did you think it was perfectly normal for people to dress up as wizards? I always thought people thought that was odd except maybe for little kids. Maybe I'm wrong!

one movie was enough to be like "woah okay that's enough minority love for now"

I don't see how you can think that based on what I said either but ok

it is pretty niche and nerdy, isn't it? I mean I do know people who do it. It isn't unheard of. They are nerds though.

if I'm wrong about that I guess I am wrong about a lot of things! I would believe it

Oh I totally understand the cultural significance of it. But I just think it's an average, boring movie. However I think the vast majority of marvel movies are average, and pretty boring. So I also recognize I'm in the minority there.

high budget majority black movie, CE hates on it.

Damn, we can't get one movie and be excited about it huh?

and then people will say "Why weren't you guys as excited about Blade?" like a singular black lead in a cast of white people in which the story literally wouldn't change if he was white compares to a majority black cast big budget film set in Africa

how is this topic hating on the movie? I'm not even hating on the fans who are taking it very seriously, which would be closer to the truth, just observing that this phenomena has expanded into areas that would typically be considered weird in other circumstances

its not and if you think so you're just not aware enough to realize that this is, for many people in the modern era, the first movie where they can actually cosplay as the "correct" race/ethnicity

Is this the we forget every other movie that you could do this with like Blade, Django, Spawn and all?

I mean, I guess that is the cultural shift I am talking about that I find odd. 15 years ago you didn't used to have to be an asshole to make fun of someone for taking a fictional setting super seriously to the point where they stretch the narrative to fit some crazy idea they have about meaning they are probably imputing unjustly

granted that particular problem is less forceful here since the movie is tailored to cause the kind of reaction it is receiving but still

not that its a bad thing! maybe it is even for the best that this kind of fandom be normalized

My biggest impression I had when first watching the trailer (and why I thought even then that this movie would probably end up being a big deal) was Wakanda itself. Most if not all black-centric movies show black people in primitive African dwellings, or slavery, or urban squalor; it's historically accurate and important to depict this, but not exactly hopeful, to say the least. I can reasonably surmise that the hyper-advanced Wakanda is one of (if not the) the first large-scale, high-profile fantasy / scifi idealization that black people can truly call their own. So it makes sense that it's kind of a big deal.

Wakanda is friggin' gorgeous. I'm very interested in the efforts they went to to design the city, which cultural art they consulted, and so on.
