am I being racist for thinking that? like some people are saying that it isnt a big deal, like nerds took harry potter and lord of the rings super seriously so it isn't weird that a significant number of black people are doing it for black panther but

1) everyone agreed those nerds were weird when they did it for those other things
and
2) I don't remember seeing all these think pieces for those things, definitely not srs ones that people are taking so srs

like I really enjoyed lord of the rings but I wouldnt watch it 3 times and then write a think piece about how maybe the balrog has a point because we should actually view it as an environmental statement in that he is protecting the earth against the machinations of dwarfkind

idk man

Except for the millions who did it. Lots of people still see movies multiple times in theatre, especially if they are visually stunning

no I am aware of that, I am saying that doesn't make it less odd

maybe this isnt the right site for this but in general people who cosplay are viewed as weird in the mainstream, but this is an exception because it is a cultural touchstone moment

okay? I feel like that is taking it a bit far.

What do you mean by "wakanda/black panther thing"? I get why it's been very popular. But I don't understand why people are calling it a great film. I think it's actually incredibly mediocre. Like on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 97%, which I don't get at all. But then again, I think the vast majority of Marvel movies are incredibly mediocre.

This video sums up my thoughts on it pretty nicely:

I mean the stuff where people are starting to greet each other based on how they do it in the movie, trying to draw real life parables from wakandan traditions and society, things like that

I mean it isn't that these things are unheard of or even bad, but typically I see it relegated to things like yeah, shitty anime or fantasy novels and only a smaller subset of people participate in such an obvious way. the broad acceptance of it just because it is the first time we have had an all black cast is what I find odd

Theres plenty of superheroes who are black that you can be. Just most dont have movies. And dressing up as black panther would show zero skin so a white person could even do it.

Blade and Spawn already get cosplayed as a lot, but you have to admit that stuff is pretty deep and not very mainstream
Also the Spawn movie was awful

But this is pretty much the biggest film with a majority black cast that's just a part of the public consciousness, without the "it's a film for black people" idea added onto it
and its the first time that many black people see the opportunity to nerd out about it
i know you don't think of lord of the rings and harry potter as necessarily "white" cultural items, and that's because "white" is just "normal" if you're white (idk what race/ethnicity you are tc or person im quoting)

so its just nice to see that normal for once is black, when everything else about society is telling you that being black is not okay or something

or so i'd wager

and it makes it "off-putting" to see a movie that isn't doing that

and somehow people being excited and cool with a movie's hype because it's a momentous cultural occasion is "too much" for you? Even compared to Harry Potter and LOTR fandom?

one movie was enough to be like "woah okay that's enough minority love for now"
