Both of his lawyers, Melissa McNeill and Gordon Weekes have spoken of Cruz's condition as "sad" after 17 people were killed and many more injured in the atrocity at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland yesterday. Students and staff barricaded themselves inside classrooms - with one group hiding in a closet as pupils cried in terror - as the shooter carried out the Valentine's Day massacre with an assault rifle. Today the suspect's lawyer said he was both mournful and remorseful and 'felt the pain felt by the community'. When asked to describe Cruz's demeanor Ms McNeill replied: "He's a broken human being, he's a broken child. "The sadness this community is feeling, I mean my children go to school in this community.
