The main reason the 2nd amendment exists is so people will always have the ability to overthrow the government if it becomes necessary to do so.

You can't have the government enforce gun control on itself.

There are restrictions on guns in the United States. If possessing a firearm is an inalienable right, these restrictions should not exist. Most people do agree that the restrictions in place are valuable such as requiring a firearm owner to be an adult, or restricting ownership for people with violent criminal histories.

So why can there not be further restrictions on this "right"? The Second Amendment doesn't say that you're free to own all weapons or firearms. It doesn't say that you need to be a legal adult to possess a firearm.

It states the purpose of the amendment so inherently people should have access to whatever the government has and since the government is exclusively adults, it makes sense that you wouldn't be allowed to use child soldiers.

Three quarters of the states must ratify an amendment, not all of them. At 50 states currently, that means 38 states would need to ratify.

Uh buddy at the time that amendment was created the US was full of child soldiers and remained as such for quite some time

Second Amendment was way back in 1791

What about the 10th amendment that states that everything not included in the first 10 is left up to the states? So isn't that where individual state laws regarding guns come into play?

10th states that anything not given to the federal government by the Constitution or by the states will be handled by the states or the people. A new amendment would be part of the Constitution, obviously.

They should mandate written and physical test, like for driving. Moreover, gun owners responsible for gun safety taught to their dependents. So if said dependents cause criminal gun violence with owner's gun, gun owner should be prosecuted.

Its not like they didnt know guns would get better and more efficient. They still thought the people had a right to defend themselves from the government. Now whether you wpuld still be able to is a different story. There is also the police to consider. If the police have become militarized you may not need to fight an army, but if a local sherrif gets too big for his britches there is a possibility of needing to fight off local police.

Cannons and gattling guns existed when the constitution was drafted. There is no clause forbidding people to own those in the amendment. The founding fathers wanted the people to be on an even playing field with a tyrannical government that was taking away the rights in which the nation was founded

With that said i do think we need a much more scrupulous process to legally purchase a firearm. There were dozens of accounts for how yesterday's shooter showed blatant red flags of violent tendencies and mental illness. Someone like him should certainly not be allowed to buy a gun.

Prior to the Gatling gun, the only weapons available to military forces capable of firing many projectiles in a short space of time were mass-firing volley weapons, like the Belgian and French mitrailleuse of the 1860s and 1870s, and field cannons firing canister shot, much like an upsized shotgun.

Just pointing out that the argument that all firearms when the constitution was drafted were one shot muskets is absolutely false. Firearm technology was evolving, another poster linked to the guns given to the Lewis and Clark expedition which were capable if fire an entire magazine of ammo in 30 seconds. To claim that the founding fathers hadn't accounted for advancements in gun technology when writing the amendment is rather ignorant.

It's mostly just misinformation and lies on top of massively bought out Congress. Most Republicans actually support universial background checks. Most people overwhelmingly support it.

http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2017/oct/03/chris-abele/do-90-americans-support-background-checks-all-gun-/

It makes me wonder what the hell people are even arguing about. Do we want to ban all guns, or do we want background checks?
