Sure, this is an option, though depending on the person the answer may often be that they can't think of anything. If my gf sees something that she wants, she'll usually just buy it herself. This is one of the biggest issues with the idea of the "perfect gift", not only do you have to find something that someone would love, it also has to be something they wouldn't find themselves. Add in the constraint that it has to occur near the time of a major holiday and you've got a recipe for stress for sure. Also, IMO, one of the best things about being in a relationship is that it can expand your horizons. I've seen and done a number of things with my gf that I'd never have done on my own. Sometimes there might be something that you think you wouldn't like that you actually turn out to enjoy.
