Some restaurants I've worked at hand ground their own beef so it's the same as what you were describing. For the rest, they don't want to tell a customer "no" for any reason. So they slap a warning label on the menu, make the serve staff verbally warn the customer that undercooked meat is dangerous, and then shrug it off. Hell, I almost got fired because I refused to serve a woman who wanted RARE CHICKEN BREAST grilled. My manager finally decided to just cook it himself rather than write me up. People are stupid sometimes and in the device industry the customer is always right, even if they're factually wrong XD

Your boss served rear chicken breast.. damn he really wanted that sale.

Customer wanted it, insisted on it. Floor manager tried to explain to her that we didn't prepare it rare but she wasn't hearing it, said she ate it that way all the time. I'm like "ok, go home and cook it for yourself. I'm not giving someone salmonella" and stepped out for my break. Boss wasn't happy with me but he knew I was right. We never heard from the lady again so idk

Also, I wanna make one thing clear @cjsdowg. If a grown ass man or woman wants to waste their stamps on crap it doesn't really bother me. Unfortunately, most SNAP recepients are getting them for their kids. I don't want a kid going hungry like I did because their momma or daddy had the self control of a child in a candy store when their card got loaded up every month. The simplest way to do that is restrict what SNAP can buy. This "mail a box" shit Trump's cooked up isn't even close to the right solution

I understand that you care about the kids (that sounded patronizing when I read out but I don't mean it to be). Like I said before I worked with in the system. I know some people waste money , but just from what I have dealt with many don't . And just thinking of taking away treat kind of bothers me. Because those little things like a candy bar or something can mean a whole when someone is down. From what you have told us you know about the being down so once more I don't mean to sound Patronizing in my reply.

Nah, is k. It's easy to tell several of us here are on the same side. We've all seen this shit first hand. I personally know how the welfare trap works. I got out and my little bro is getting out but sis is probably stuck. There's no one easy solution to the whole mess. I just wanna make sure we're helping people do better, not enabling them to wallow in the mud. Right now that's what SNAP does for some people. Not everybody who's on it, but if there's a way to make it help MORE people I want to find it

I remember when red hats got pissed at an Obama for dictating what their kids can eat at school. Now they'll cheer when Trump dictates what that kid's family can eat at home.

kind of a difference between telling parents what they can BUY for their kids at school and telling people what they can FREELY get on taxpayer dime.

People on food stamps have paid into it. It'd be like telling people what food they're allowed to buy for their family with the money that they've contributed.

No?

How not?

People pay taxes that pays for food stamps. Then they need food stamps and take from the same pot they contributed to.

Cereal isn't exactly healthy, I do see you wanting to skip most cereals like Lucky Charms, Frosted Flakes, Mini Wheats etc because of the sugar content. As far as I know it depends on the pasta.

What about people who have never paid taxes? Do they not get food stamps?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a specific tax that funds food stamps. Unlike with unemployment.

What makes you say that? I agree and understand that sugary cereals like the ones you listed are not healthy. The ingredients of "real" cereal however are parts of a balanced diet.

Cereal was just a scam made by the Seventh-day Adventist to get people to stop eating meat, and to help the profit level of the John kellogg.

Trump administration wants to dictate what kind of food poor people eat

The government already did that even before Trump took office.

There were specific items you could not legally buy with EBT funds; there were highly advertised rules. Considering how many US citizens are now on food stamps, I'm not surprised administrations want to further restrict what can be bought with the funds. The point of the programs isn't to enable you to buy lobster dinners and 5-star steaks like wealthier households casually can. It's not to allow you to keep up with the Joneses. It's just to prevent you from starvation that inhibits your ability to find and keep steady employment (contributing back into the economy).

Food stamps are also provided as a means for needy households to maintain healthy nourishment...again, so they can eventually contribute back into the economy. When the parents are just buying liters of soda, Pop Tarts, and birthday cakes for their kids to live off of...they're not making responsible choices with those funds. If anything, they're setting their kids up for health issues which will make them more of a burden on the economy, not a new cog. Naturally government agencies would want to avoid that, both on an economic level and concern for children's welfare.

As someone who's not only lived with and helped other people find food assistance to get back on their feet, I am not at all shocked that the government wants to finally put a tighter limit on what can be purchased with EBT funds. What I was originally shocked by was what you could buy 6 months ago. As long as you saw the word "nutrition" on the label, you could buy it. That includes most junk food packaging. And with some households, if you're allowed to buy tons of junk food, that is ALL they will buy.

This isn't really a right or left issue guys.

Americans on EBT are fatter than Americans that aren't which makes them some of the fattest human beings to ever have existed in the entire history of the species. That is a fact that people on the left and right acknowledge.

So what do you do about it?

The Obama administration's talking points were that we need to make sure everyone has access to a wider range of foods than what you would find at your local 7/11. Basically access to fresh fruits and veggies. But like the saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. The evidence is iffy on whether or not just offering people fresh food as an option will do anything to reduce the obesity level so the other front to attack on is education.

Kids that are taught to pay attention to calorie counts on the food they eat and basically conditioned to eat non-junk food foods will be more likely to continue to care when the grow up.

This "food stamps only work for these foods" approach is a bit heavy handed. I think a compromise would be rolling it out in a few areas and studying whether or not it makes the people forced into a diet healthier.

Protip: If you get a refund from the IRS in any given year, you didn't pay federal income tax that year. Waaaaaaaay more people fall into this category than you might think.

Yep! I'm oversimplifying for the slow kids in the class. More realistically, anyone whose total income is below the baseline for the standard deduction OR whose itemized deductions amount to equal to or more than their total income will not have paid federal income tax for that given year. This is why things like earned income credit and child tax credits are such a big deal. They drastically reduce a person's tax burden

Cereals get a bad rap for having too much sugar, but they also have a ton of vitamins and minerals that you won't find in one other singular food out there. Everyone always forgets the latter part when the topic of cereal gets brought up.

I don't think the evidence is very good that SNAP recipients are fatter than non-SNAP recipients due to their food purchasing habits, though. I'm not even sure about the fact that they are fatter than non-SNAP recipients unless you are just trying to say that poor people are fatter than richer people, but I don't see how that's useful. It is a very difficult thing to track and evaluate, though.
