Last time I actually noticed this happening was years ago (I rarely pay in cash), and the shop owner was so surprised I said something that he actually gave me free stuff.

Absolutely. I think there's a certain scale in how much I'll feel better about myself for doing a good deed VS how much I'll feel better about having x amount of money. If it's a buck, it's probably better for me to let them know and make everyone feel better. If it's 20, I'm probably happier hanging onto that.

NOW HOW MUCH.....

If it's a few cents I don't say anything because they probably just ran out of pennies and rounded me up because of it. If it's more than that, I'll probably say something after counting it again.

Probably the same for me. I wouldn't inconvenience someone over three cents, but I wouldn't feel right walking out of there with actual cash.

I'm the opposite. If it's a small amount it isn't worth of effort of talking to somebody some more to bring it up, but if it's a significant amount I'd feel guilty for keeping it.

Now, if I were working there and my boss accidentally gave me 20% more than he should have I'd be fine keeping my lips sealed purely hypothetically of course

I'm curious how many would speak up if they were given less back, how much would it take?

I had this happen once when they though i gave them a 20 instead of a 10 and i told them.
To be honest I'm usually unlikely to notice however but if I notice I'll let them know

I probably wouldn't notice because I'm usually freaking out about getting everything back into my wallet and stepping out of line to let the next person take their turn for me to remember to count my change.

I should make that a priority and try to swallow my social anxiety.

That's not really sticking it to the big corporation so much as just potentially getting the cashier in trouble/fired if their till is off by a lot.

If I notice then sure and have done several times in the past.

I virtually never pay for anything with cash now though and even when I do I never check the change so I'd never notice it anymore (nor would I notice if shortchanged either)

Do you think a billion dollar corporation fires its employees for accidentally giving the wrong change once?

It costs hundred times that to hire and train a replacement.

If I notice, yes. If I don't notice until later, it depends on the amount of the shortage.

Some years back, I discovered a lady at a bowling alley had given me $10 extra. I returned it, and she thanked me by letting me bowl for free during practice sessions.
