Fighting game fans who hate the Smash series always crack me up. I dunno why, but it never gets old for me.

I don't understand why people say things like this. It's a completely different style of game.

If they hadn't taken Melee's system and completely warped it with Brawl and 4, sure.

But Melee still offers a very unique play style and speed from both of those games and the high level of depth involved with all the higher level techniques makes it still so much fun to watch and play.

Melee will go on forever.

Has there been a statement why there are only 8 games this year? I know tournament operations isn't that easy but I think it was 9 for the last few years.

A few of the past years, they've started with 7-8 announced and then done a late announcement or a charity drive to award a final spot. I won't be surprised if it happens again.

they've acknowledged the last donation drive as a mistake so i wouldn't bet on it.

i think they did announce some charity thing this year but it's not for a game to get into EVO. it was a partnership with Humble Bundle for Puerto Rico or something.

i don't even know if people remember that Melee was considered "dead/dying" for a time or at least in a "Dark Age". it was just that Brawl was viewed as so awful by a large portion of the competitive community that they continued playing/went back to Melee. they literally called one tournament series "Revival of Melee"

there are still smaller dedicated communities today who still play older games, hosting gatherings, smaller tournaments and whatnot. Super Turbo and 3S are the more notable ones afaik.

Melee is a notable case in that its resurgence wasn't only old players coming back but a sizable group of younger, new players joining the competitive community.

I think I'd rather see MVC:I than two Smash games though. Because they're essentially the same game. I know in the past we've had something like Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha in the same EVO, but I think we have enough options nowadays for some real main stream variety that we can just ditch Melee now and give that spot to something else, even if it isn't MVC:I.

The other one just has faster gameplay and less characters. It's literally the equivalent from SF2 to SFA.

People are invested in Melee because it's a comfort game that will never change. They can turn their brain off and melt into repetition. They don't even have to remember new player names!

I mean, he's not wrong. It's pretty easy to see that they play pretty differently just from watching them, since they view differently.

I have no opinion on whether I like Melee still being there over, say, MvC:I, but just going "They're the same game" is rather unfair

I dont find WiiU that fun to watch, even when Zero got punked last year

Melee is interesting when Armada isnt godmode so pretty rare (though I like when the people in the B Tier beat M2K which has been happening more)

i thought people already knew that it wasn't going to be at Capcom Pro Tour before the Evo announcement

and Capcom has pretty much never supported Marvel (games) anyway outside of that one time where they had that small invitational(?) for Ultimate Marvel 3 and the gimmick tournament for Infinite. Marvel 3 went 6 years without a patch or anything.

Wasn't the Marvel 3 drought due to Disney moving Marvel fighting game development to their own studio for a few years? At the very least I remember some sort of licencing issue.

there's also at least a precedent for a company not wanting their game to be showcased at EVO, as odd as that may sound, with Nintendo. obviously the situations are different but i don't think it's completely improbable that Marvel/Disney were messing with Infinite to the extent where it was a factor in Infinite not getting an EVO spot.
