It looks like they attached the cloverfield name to it because otherwise no one would have watched it. It felt like it tried to explain parts of the first movie, with the one guy saying the ~~space station would awaken monsters in the ocean, or pull demons from other dimensions. I feel like it would have been better if ~~activating the Shepard again at the end actually brought back the people that died.
