Why did the industry move out though

Could it have been thanks to Democrat-backed union demands that made cars manufactured there uncompetative?

Automobile history 101

When the first gas shock hit, the American automotive industry was caught completely unprepared as they never cared about miles per gallon with their product, which opened the door to European and especially Japanese manufacturers that had been moving on that front for years, if not decades. That left us behind the 8-ball throughout the late 70s up until the mid 90s, and by the time we caught up the damage had been done. Detroit needed the American auto share to not just be a majority but a lion's share of the overall market to sustain itself, and that was no longer the case.

The downward spiral was in full effect, and overall globalization standards lead to even more jobs leaving the country for lower wages than would've been offered anywhere in the US and were also increasingly automatized. If you kept every single auto manufacturer as they always were in Detroit, the city still would've been in a horrible position as automation resulted in significantly fewer jobs, which wouldn't have been enough to remotely sustain the size that the city had grown to.

So, no. It's not a democrat versus republican thing. Fewer jobs doomed Detroit thanks inherently to automation. Cheap overseas labor doomed Detroit regardless of unions. And if you want to make any point about it, sure.... some wealthier southern cities have attracted automobile manufacturers with big tax breaks and lower worker standards compared to Detroit, but not remotely in near enough numbers for that to have saved Detroit based on the first two points.

Primarily?
An over reliance in the music, automotive, and various other factory type industries.
Once Motown died off and California became the "entertainment capitol" all Detroit (all of Michigan) really had was factory and industrial work.
When it became more profitable to move these factories overseas or automate them, that crushed whatever life support Michigan still had.

Only because you blatantly ignored WHY American labor was and is prohibitively expensive - Dem-backed auto unions demanding more and more money and benefits for less and less labor.

Before the crash in the late 2000's, GM was paying $40 an hour STARTING for a person to operate a computerized torque wrench. Plus benefits. That's fuckin' insane.

American car companies didn't start to produce garbage until way after Detroit started its decline. There's many reasons for Detroit's failure. Some of these including bad infrastructure (mostly from poor interstate planning), unions, lack of employees (white flight), the prohibition (crime and the war on crime), and there's other reasons that are speculated, but they're only speculation. The Big Three's market share didn't start to severely drop until almost 1980 and by then Detroit had already been in a steady downward spiral since the 1950s. Foreign competition wasn't a huge factor, if at all. And although bad democratic policies aided in Detroit's decline, there's more to it than that.

A) Source for that, and
B) I can't speak for entry-level positions, but even starting specialized positions require high wages. That's not too much of a surprise.
C) Even plants in Georgia have significantly higher wages than plants in Mexico. It's not like all the jobs that still existed bolted for other sites in the US, Detroit is still the biggest auto manufacturer in the US by a wide margin.

Automation doesn't mean "zero jobs".

So show us that Detroit would be just as bad now if unions didn't force all the manufacturing jobs out of the state. I'll wait.
