Alright so since it's technically running into this year and I was already interested in it, I started The Ancient Magus' Bride. First off, Elias is dope as fuck and I love his design. Second, I didn't realize until after finishing the first episode that there's a prequel 3 episodes. Should I watch those before going on or is it really not that important and I can go to it after I've watched the main series

I think the prequel episodes fit in around....episode 9? There will be a montage scene that at one point shows Chise finding a book, and that's where those OVAs fit.

I think they take place during episode twelve but quite frankly AMB doesn't have enough of an ongoing plot for them to spoil anything major so you can watch them whenever.

I didn't say it had anything to do with it, was just expressing an opinion about the show since it came up, but way to project.

The pacing of the whole middle of the show was bad enough that I dropped it for a solid 3 months. Way too fast, way too much stuff in not enough time. It felt like I was watching a digest movie.

Also, the budget took big hits. They reused a ton of animation, and the rotoscoping got pretty subpar for a while as well.

I always just assume when people say people say something is good or bad they mean it how much in terms they like it (along with using what the online community or their friends think of the show as proof or anti-proof to validate their opinions)

Team Japan's routine used one of the character's music. This was pointed out by NBC's colour commentator who gave some background on this choice to non anime viewers.

Fans or people familiar with Yuri On Ice reacted positively to this, while outlets online have covered this music choice and the reaction from fans.

I think it was still a good show. It was just too ambitious for what what it had. With the amount of popularity it has and an assuredly bigger budget, Yamamoto will surely be able to realize her true vision in the second season.

I wonder who can offer the budget and capitalise on the show's popularity.

Oh right, Netflix, they're perfect for this, given that the show's international fanbase would fit with their operations.

However, it appears Team Japan won't be getting in the medal positions for this sport. I don't know how strong their singles team is though. In another anime related note, one of the top ranked women in singles is a noted anime fan.

So we may see some more anime representation, be it outfit or music choice.

I don't see what's wrong with posting your opinion about an anime once it comes up in discussion. That seemed like a natural time to mention it, if anything. It's not like LtM said anything trollish or tried to shut down the conversation either. Calling him out derailed the Olympics discussion way more than leaving it alone would have.

2020 I could see being a throwback it terms of anime representation. We've seen some of the mascots Japan's committee has selected and they're very safe well known characters. But I do agree it could be a huge opportunity to showcase some stuff. Summer Olympics are much bigger than the Winter ones and line up with a lot of people's holidays. This thing is generally all about timing though, in this case Yuri On Ice came out at the right time, because the show hit it big, when possible representatives will have been preparing their routines.

Well for non-winter sports, the only real shows to have influence that I've seen are Captain Tsubasa and maaaaybe Ashita no Joe. Though the most famous fan who is an active star, is I think Sergio Aguero.

I think some baseball shows like Kyojin no Hoshi have influenced the domestic scene in Japan, but zero internationally.

I've seen anime shows influence professional wrestling, but while it is about athletic performances, it's not regulated.

Maybe in 5-10 years we'll see athletes influenced by shows we currently enjoy, distribution methods have changed a lot since, so it'll be fun to see who grew up on Ippo and became a great boxer.

Not sure if anyone else here is still watching this, but six episodes in and Katana Maidens is still amazing. I'm going to try and resist the urge to shill for it until it ends (only 1/4 of the way through, still plenty of time for it to screw up somehow) but after the last episode I couldn't resist the urge to post something. I could go on and on about how specific elements seem to have been designed to appeal to me specifically but that would be hard to do without spoilers so I'll just say this. Every time I became worried that it might stumble into a common storytelling pitfall, Katana Maidens has instead managed to pleasantly surprise me.

I've been semi-actively seeking out other anime that might be similar to it (Girls und Panzer, Strike Witches) and, while they're still good, so far Katana Maidens is blowing them all out of the water.
