I'll point to his work on the UK Tournament when no one was in his ear. He has really developed that ability (sure he still whiffs some move names), and he was able to seamlessly work in the experience and talent of the workers as well as overarcing narratives much better on the tourney. Mauro is a guy who I like somewhat, but he has some strange quirks that bother me from time-to-time. I mean you can see him working the experience and talent of the workers into his normal PBP but he often ends up doing it in a way that it basically comes off as irrelevant factoids more than something that's relevant to how the match is going. I mean you can blame that on someone being in his ear all you want, and I'm sure that's part of it, but I think a big part of it is you just not being as familiar with the workers in the UK Tournament so you don't see it as obviously irrelevant as you do with the workers you're more familiar with. It's also possible Cole was helped in the UK Tournament by things like Twitter and such not being thought of as as relevant there-- which again I don't think is all on the voice in his ear and is partially on the product throwing so much content out there and Cole not really having any instinctive idea of which of that content is interesting to the viewer. I think Coach actually brings relevant stuff up a lot more often-- it's much more glaring now because there's so much more garbage that Cole has to filter than there was back when Coach was a regular announcer. I think the lack of that inner ear voice left the whole world open to Cole's devices, and Nigel was the perfect guy to fly as his wingman. I vastly prefer Nigel to Corey Graves. I know that's going to get me booed out of the building here, but Nigel buttresses anyone with whom he works. Mauro is less cringey with Nigel. Nigel doesn't go sooooo over the top with Percy Watson (who is Booker T with no experience or redeemable value), but enough that you can appreciate his sass. Corey is the WWE guy, and Nigel is the UFC guy when it comes to color. It's the subtlety of Nigel that works for me. Corey is cartoonish and goofy - which is fine when he's bitching about pancakes, but gets old when he's saying Hallelujah for Bobby Roode and not giving any real reason why he likes Roode. He's a flowchart announcer and whether the flowchart is relevant to what's going on is partially whether the product is conducive to interesting notes since his ability to QC is poor, partially who's in the ring, and partially luck.
