Anyone who uses automatic checkouts is a fool of the highest order.

Most Cashiers at Walmart would rather stand around and do other things than checkout a line of people. I also have used the self order kiosk at McDonald's and was thanked by the Cashier since he had stuff to clean in the lobby. It's a real advancement that I welcome.

He wont be thanking you when he gets canned because the kiosk will take his job.

Did they mention cutting hours, shutting down locations, or cutting back employees?

For the first point, it could negatively affect a lot of people on welfare. They could be making just enough where they can no longer qualify for benefits, but not enough to actually live off of.

Self checkout is the biggest crock of shit ever. Next theyre gonna come out with self-stocking where I gotta go to the warehouse to get the shit I want myself and self-deli where I have to go cut my own goddamned lunch meat and self-produce where I gotta go to some shitty ass farm in the middle of nowhere and pick some fruits myself.

Fuck these lazy ass retail workers and the business they rode in on too

I just skipped to the end of this topic, holy shit is it really 20 years to qualify? Or is that just an exaggeration?

Edit: I read the first post and goddamn. My job had people join literally two weeks before the reform and get a bonus. And on top of that they have to close stores behind it? Jesus

Closing a line of business is irrelevant. This is no different than Intel laying off a group or IBM reorganizing.

Walmart is a business. As a business they sometimes have to make tough decisions including downsizing in whichever areas are not doing well. Sam's Club would be one of those.

People are desperate to cling to some narrative about how this proves that the tax cuts weren't good...because they have nothing else lol.

doesn't matter what narrative you pick

the tax cuts will be repealed as soon as dems take power back

which is why business response to the cuts are bonuses and minimum wage increases, and not salary increases across the board

they know it won't last

(well, that and this stuff is easy to market and not actually a large fraction of their tax savings. you want to see a company that gave up most of its tax cut, look at what BGE decided to do)

i didn't say it would be immediate

if dems manage to take the house + senate both, though, i would get out of any equities because you can expect a rapid impeachment effort against both prez+VP to seat a president pelosi

that would be a funny ride

also, not denouncing far right lunacy has done good things for the GOP. i expect embracing certain aspects of far left lunacy will benefit dems too.

we'll see if they can figure out which things. they don't take the lesson very well that feminism isn't a good banner cry

Yeah, let's try to impeach someone based off nothing - no facts, and try to go against what this country was founded on.

Unless you have irrefutable proof, trying to impeach the President, when the people voted him in, is going to cause an uprising. Not to mention, put doubts in people's minds if democracy really works.

Removing Trump from office is literally the dumbest thing the left could do. Trump IS their platform, and without him, would people even bother coming to vote in 2020? They'd literally be taking away a free win to the Presidency by trying to impeach him.

i've attached a series of trailing stop losses to my equity positions to ensure I can get out in advance of the people who will actually follow through with their claims though, because when dems strip the tax cuts away the market will go into freefall. it's only this high because of the cuts; P/E would be off the charts otherwise.

to be fair ive wanted to spend a few years in other countries for a while now but the far left rising to power would push me out asap. democrats made it clear that they are my enemy, so why stay and support them with my money?

Walmart is boosting the minimum hourly wage for its U.S. employees to $11 and dishing out bonuses of up to $1,000, crediting President Trump's tax cut for enabling the move.

The increase for the nation's largest private employer also comes amid political pressure to bolster minimum wages.

The big-box store chain has more than 1 million U.S. hourly employees.

Today, we are building on investments weve been making in associates, in their wages and skills development, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. Its our people who make the difference and we appreciate how they work hard to make every day easier for busy families.

The wage increase will take effect in February. Walmart said the one-time bonuses would cost the company $400 million and will be based on the length of service. Employees who have worked for at least 20 years will get the full $1,000.

The company is also boosting its paid maternity leave policy for full-time hourly workers to 10 weeks and increasing its paid paternity leave policy to six weeks.

Walmart also said it would offer financial help to employees who are seeking to adopt children.

Most of that was already or was going to be put in place WELL before the Tax Cuts ever legislated / signed. It was already in the pipeline for the workers to get those benefits... but with the passing of these Trump Tax Cuts, the Walmart execs (and other companies) are making the (very smart) pr move to wrap up these benefits (again, they were ALREADY on the way to their employees / already implemented) as "Gifts Thanks to the Trump Tax Cuts".

It's basically giving someone their birthday gift on Xmas day... instead of getting both a Xmas gift and a Birthday Gift ~ you just got one (an relatively cheap one at that).

ripple is a very logical bet as well given its institutional backing. if i were willing to invest in crypto it's where i would've gone; market manipulation clearly seems to favor it.

All of this is just PR (very very SMART pr) by Walmart execs taking advantage of the recent Tax Cuts getting passed and FALSELY tying these "new" benefits to them.

Again, it's well played by them since they know their base / the uneducated on these policies will eat it up hook line and sinker.

rumors are that Walmart had this wage hike planned for ~2 years now with the first $1 increase happening in 2017 and the second one happening now.

considering the timing of this with the wage increase announced by Target, it's entirely possible this was a result of market competition and nothing to do with tax cuts.

it's not hard to see why Walmart would have a vested financial interest in drumming up public support for a tax cut that largely benefits them. if the tax cut saves them 10 billion and this wage increase costs them 1 billion, clearly they're doing alright as a result. this is likely just PR to get folks, especially those most negatively affected by potential cuts in public benefits, to side with tax cuts that favor giant corporations.

also, if the cost to these workers of lost public assistance (medicare, WIC, etc) outweighs the wage increase, it doesn't mean a whole lot to them.

im not saying this isn't beneficial to workers, but to think this entire think is puppies and lollipops because Walmart said so is incredibly naive.

also, Sam's Club (owned by Walmart) announced they're closing a ton of stores and laying off ~5,000 workers, just FYI

It's unfortunate that the left has adopted a position of "tax cuts are never good."

Ultimately that is what the opposition to the tax cuts boils down to. The left is opposed to tax cuts in principle. Just like they always favor tax increases. It's a matter of adhering to their side of the political spectrum rather than paying attention to the results of different policies.

It's what led to the shit storm that is the ACA.

the left generally doesn't favor things that benefit the wealthy at the cost of the masses, which is how they view tax cuts that give most benefit to the wealthiest individuals and corporations. if taxes were raised on the rich / corporations and lowered for the middle class, do you actually think the left would oppose that? if so, that shatters your blanket statement of "the left thinks tax cuts are never good"

stop thinking entirely in blanket generalizations and extremes. someone who claims to value logic so much should be more analytical that that and should think critically and logically.

There's no pragmatism in the Democratic platform, and barely any in the Republican platform.
That's the problem, and has been for quite some time.

True. I could concede that tax cuts that are too drastic can have a very negative effect. But it seems like certain posters on this site will never concede that tax cuts can have a positive effect.

I think the recent tax cuts are a good thing and that we'll see more positive results. Especially if we can crack down on useless spending and fraud (like Medicare's 60 billion in fraudulent charges last year) and divert money into more useful ventures.

just like you will never concede that "the market" is sometimes abhorrently greedy and needs government to regulate it for the greater good

Examples where the market is abhorrently greedy and needs government to regulate it for the greater good? I never said otherwise. I'm just curious what you think is a good example of where I denied that.
