Walmart was on the way to raising wages anyway (a by product of Doug McMillon who has made it one of his priorities), so not sure this is much of an effect of the Trump tax cuts.

yeah I was going to say that they had already planned on raising the minimum wage to $11

the bonuses are new ofc

McMillion is a decent dude, has tried to improve most things for non supervisor hourlies and the overall Walmart experience, he seems to be well aware that kign status isn't permanent and the company needs to attract more qualified associates and improve it's god awful reputation of being among the worst shopping experiences in America.

Capitalism is cyclical in nature, there are going to be booms and crashes no matter what anybody does. But yes, the booms reach higher (and more fragile) and the crashes hit lower due to bad consumerism.

If perfect consumerism could be achieved then capitalism would be a stable system but that is not realistic

Except that in the United States, we do not practice pure Capitalism. We have regulations and social policies that help stabilize this cyclical nature you're referring to.

Who said anything about pure capitalism besides you and prodclod?

As for regulations, they stabilize in the short term and destabilize in the long term. Pure capitalism would be economically healthier than this bastardized system that kicks the can down the alley

BTW new folks won't actually start at $11, you will be stuck at $10 for a while and after completing the "training" program be bumped up to that wage, most new folks don't last that long though unfortunately.

It's interesting to me, without all the backlash of the tax bill, would some of these companies still have felt a strong desire to give these benefits?

Plus, you have to question if these were already going to happen anyway, and the timing to announce it now was just too good to pass up

I'm just generally skeptical when hearing about things like this. Obviously it directly end up being good for the employee, but it's always done for a reason, in this case PR

If you work at Walmart for 20 years and don't land a promotion to Store Manager or District Manager or something like that, you have no initiative whatsoever. :/

What's beautiful about America is that you can be an hourly employee at Walmart and still retire with dignity and wealth if you are wise with your money, though.

Maybe in the Midwest. Not where I am in the Greater NYC area.

Hmmm yeah I'm in Illinois so here it is doable. Not sure in NYC. But tbqh you can be a skilled software engineer in NYC and still be broke, simply because NYC is crazy expensive.

Well, they jumped the gun. You can comment on individual aspects as they have an effect, but declaring the whole thing a success at this stage is a bit premature (ditto for the ACA).

Walmart is boosting the minimum hourly wage for its U.S. employees to $11 and dishing out bonuses of up to $1,000, crediting President Trump's tax cut for enabling the move.

As a Walmart Employee, this is a fucking lie. They upped base salary to 11$ an hour last year before the election. And have been trying to find ways to cut people ever since.

When I worked there back in 2011 doing night stocking I was surprised at the amount of employees with 5 plus and up to 20 years service were NOT in any kind of management position. One of the managers had been there 15 plus years. None of the others had reached 5 yet. But there was still a lot of turnover in us grunts at the time though. Thankfully that was only 5 months of a pitiful $8.75/hr.

Lol, no.. it hasn't been "proven". By "a few years" you mean 8, providing there is no extension... and the amount they increase by is far, far less than what they're saving leading up to the supposed increase.

Imagine getting upset because companies are deciding to raise wages and give out bonuses because of Trump's plan.
